Vista - Intermittent Printing On Vista

I have an HP laptop running Vista connected via USB to an HP OfficeJet
v40xi all-in-one. HP says that the driving for this printer is
included in the Vista OS.

Printing happens intermittently. Sometimes it prints just fine.
Other times it prints part of a page. When this occurs the status for
the job in Vista's print queue is "Error - Printing". Most times,
when this occurs, I can't delete the job and I must reboot the machine
in order to trying printing again.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

It's more likely to be hardware related than Vista related.... check the USB
cable, and also check that the USB ports are not set to go to sleep when not
being used (in Device Manager).

1. USB ports not set to go to sleep.
2. New USB cable installed.

No change. Any other ideas for things I should investigate?
