You forgot to mention what operating system your desktop computer is running. You need to set up file/printer sharing on a Local Area Network. Once you have done that and shared out the printer (from the desktop machine), you will install the Canon drivers (making sure they are the latest ones available for Vista - go to Canon's website for that) on the laptop and you will be able to print. Here are cut/paste steps for setting up your network. Since you didn't mention the desktop's operating system, I'm including all the information about XP. Some of the information below may not be applicable to you. *** This link will take you through Vista networking very well: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx Problems sharing files between computers on a network are generally caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall; or 2) inadvertently running two firewalls such as the built-in Windows Firewall and a third-party firewall; and/or 3) not having identical user accounts and passwords on all Workgroup machines; 4) trying to create shares where the operating system does not permit it. Here are some general networking tips for home/small networks: 1. Configure firewalls on all machines to allow the Local Area Network (LAN) traffic as trusted. With Windows Firewall, this means allowing File/Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. Normally running the Network Setup Wizard on XP will take care of this for those machines. The only "gotcha" is that this will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you aren't running a third-party firewall or have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a firewall, then you're fine. With third-party firewalls, I usually configure the LAN allowance with an IP range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Do not run more than one firewall. 2. With earlier Microsoft operating systems, the name of the Workgroup didn't matter. Apparently it does with Vista, so put all computers in the same Workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, Computer Name tab. 3. Create identical user accounts and passwords on all machines. If you wish a machine to boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista: Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm 4. If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center: a. If you need Pro's ability to set fine-grained permissions, turn off Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab) and create identical user accounts/passwords on all computers. b. If you don't care about using Pro's advanced features, leave the Simple File Sharing enabled. Simple File Sharing means that Guest (network) is enabled. This means that anyone without a user account on the target system can use its resources. This is a security hole but only you can decide if it matters in your situation. I think it is a good idea to create the identical user accounts/passwords in any case when Vista machines are involved and it isn't an onerous task with home/small networks. 5. Create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users' home directories (My Documents) or Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for details about Vista sharing. *** Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" | Guest | Re: Setting up a Printer on my Home Network I have Windows XP sp2 Home Edition installed on my desktop and use windows security centre Firewall only this has the Printer Sharing Exception ticked in the exceptions tab I use AVG Antivirus on this machine. I have changed the Workgroup name on my Laptop to MSHOME same as that set on the Desktop machine. The Canon i865 printer is plugged into this computer on the printer Port LPT1 and works fine and I used to connect and share this printer all the time when both computers were on XP. I have also installed the update KB 92210 which makes my XP Desktop visible on the Full View Map in Network Sharing Centre -which it is now. It will not let me set Pinter Sharing on the Vista Laptop as it says that there is no printer connected. The printer sharing field is not active (light grey). I have tried to install the printer again and it is just not finding it, I have inserted \\Desktop\canon i865 into the browser field instead but it will not accept this and just gives an error message. Any other ideas ....thanks... -- Brian "Malke" wrote: > brianfire wrote: > > Hi > > I have just installed Vista onto my laptop and I used to share my Canon i865 > > which is connected to my desktop computer on my home network by wireless > > connection, I have tried to set this up and it wont find the printer...i have > > updated the drivers from canon on both computers but it still will not find > > or connect this printer.. any ideas please ! > > You forgot to mention what operating system your desktop computer is > running. | Guest | Re: Setting up a Printer on my Home Network I have followed the instructions in the article [http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net...vista_fp.mspx] but I still can not find or share my printer ...my computer is set to Private.... both have the same Workgroup name MSHOME and I can see the other computer on my Neywork map. I have enabled Printer Sharing on the XP Desktop computer and in the exception tab it is ticked...I only have Windows Firewall on the desktop computer with AVG Antivirus so it should not be prevented from sharing by the firewall but still it will not find my printer. I have downloaded and installed the latest Canon Vista compatable Printer drivers onto both computers... its weird and driving me nuts because it just will not find the printer over the wireless network !!! -- Brian "Cari (MS-MVP)" wrote: > A good and thorough article is at: > http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx > -- > Cari (MS-MVP) > Windows Technologies - Printing & Imaging > http://www.coribright.com/windows > > "brianfire" <brianfire@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:1868CFDB-825E-44D7-A2ED-E8CB2EDF3A0A@microsoft.com... > > Hi > > I have just installed Vista onto my laptop and I used to share my Canon > > i865 > > which is connected to my desktop computer on my home network by wireless > > connection, I have tried to set this up and it wont find the printer...i > > have > > updated the drivers from canon on both computers but it still will not > > find > > or connect this printer.. any ideas please ! > > -- > > Brian > > |

| Guest | Re: Setting up a Printer on my Home Network Have now resolved the problem by re-installing the Updated Vista Driver on my Laptop it appears it had not loaded correctly.
