| Guest | Vista and Lexmark X2470 printer.< All In One > I installed my printer using a Vista compatible CD supplied by Lexmark and had three months printing without problems. For no apparent reason the printer and computer ceased to communicate. I have spent several hours with Lexmark Tech. Dept., and am satisfied that the fault is not with the printer. I have installed/uninstalled the drivers and software dozens of times to no avail. I have changed the spooler properties to no avail. I cannot set it to "print to printer "without an error code. It will print the Test Page but it takes several minutes to start printing from being prompted, and then it prints so slowly that you think it has stopped at times. I hope someone out there has a solution, and can save my sanity. |

Word for word with any weird code letters etc. You certainly are not alone: http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php? p=2870&sid=739d8816e0c6bd8403fbea762a3fbf60 |

The reply was "you are in a helicopter" Absolutely correct but of now help whatsoever! Here is what the error code means 1804 0x0000070C The specified datatype is invalid. ERROR_INVALID_DATATYPE but what the meaning means and what to do about it I don't know. However I'll do a bit more searching with friends on the Compuserve Forumsbut the error message may help some of the WIndows Gurus here. That it was OK for 3 months would tend to indicate that something changed in VISTA and let's face it some of their updates do break things. Are you able to roll back with System Restore to a point before it acted up? Or uninstall updates from Windows Update over that period and see if that cures it. PS This is not a printer on a network is it or a shared printer in any way? |

| Guest | Re: Vista and Lexmark X2470 printer.< All In One > You are not going to believe this but could this on the Lexmark Support/Driver site for your X2470 be the answer: http://support.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/...29:1:0:538:0:0 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Attention Windows Vista Users If you have installed your printer on your PC using an original Lexmark Driver CD that came with your product and you are experiencing problems when printing, you may have installed the Windows XP driver. Follow these steps to resolve: · Disconnect your USB cable from your printer. · Uninstall all Lexmark printer drivers on your PC. · Download the correct Vista driver for your model. · Install the driver on your PC. Important - Do not reconnect the USB cable until the install software prompts the question of how the printer is connected. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the driver they have for VISTA: http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi? ccs=229:1:0:538:0:0&searchLang=en&os_group=Windows%20Vista&target= cjr2400EN.exe: Driver for Microsoft Windows Vista. If this is not it then have a look at this Microsoft Hotfix that applies to Multifunction Printers and if you have that second instance of the printer get onto Microsoft as shown and get the hotfix. Look forward to hearing from you! |

| Guest | Re: Vista and Lexmark X2470 printer.< All In One > Sorry I omitted the hotfix link: When you connect a USB multifunction printer device to a Windows Vista -based computer, a second instance of the printer object is created, and the first instance no longer works http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934633/ contains the following symptom When you open the Printers item in Control Panel in this scenario, you experience the following symptoms: • In the list of installed printers, there is a second instance of the printer object for this device. • The original instance of the printer object is set as the default printer. However, the original instance of the printer object does not communicate with the multifunction printer device. Therefore, this instance of the printer object does not work as expected. But I hope the answer is in the driver .... |

Thanks for all the previous advice. The root of the problem is that Windows will not allow the latest Vista compatible driver/s to be installed, and overrides them with it's own stored/remembered version. Here's what you do. Uninstall all loaded Lexmark drivers/software, including reboot. Download latest driver version from Website, including software. Then find Lexmark 2400 file in desktop. Right click on file and click "Run as Administrator "from selection offered. The printer installation programme will re-run and on completion (incl. reboot again ) you should be back in control of your printer. Note that this also worked for me with my Speedtouch modem, which also went haywire due to Windows installing obsolete drivers. Thanks again for all your help and I hope this continues to work for other strugglers....... |

Equally or more important with USB devices is to install the software before plugging the USB cable into the PC. If you don't then Windows thinks it knows best and goes driver hunting. I've had that happen at the same time as the HP Printer software was trying to install the correct software! |

Thanks for the reminder NOT to plug in USB devices until drivers are installed.I missed it from my method description. Thanks again for your time and trouble. |
