Unable to connect to shared printer from Vista, but XP okay

I have an HP DeskJet 6540 shared via a US Robotics US809108 ADSL router at
address http://192.168.1.1:1631/printers/My_Printer. I can connect to the
printer, and print successfully from a Windows XP machine, yet when I try to
connect to the same address from Windows Vista I am told:

"Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure that you have typed the
name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network."

Adding it as a local printer and then assigning the port
http://192.168.1.1:1631/printers/My_Printer doesn't work either, test prints
just sit in the queue.

Re: Unable to connect to shared printer from Vista, but XP okay

I assume the router is also your print server device.

Adding this after the network printer search page, Not on the list, Select
printer by name

enter the URL information in the dialog.

Is the "My Printer" a US Robotics requirement?

Re: Unable to connect to shared printer from Vista, but XP okay

Thanks for the reply.

The steps you posted are what I have tried and lead to the error I posted. I
also tried changing the name to Printer to remove the underscore in case that
caused a problem, but no joy.

The router is indeed the print server too. It registers the printer as Ready
and from the XP machine last night I printed off a manual without problems.

I should also note that the failure is almost instantaneous, rather than a
long timeout.

Re: Unable to connect to shared printer from Vista, but XP okay

No, it simply allows you to give a name and description to the printer and
provides you the HTTP link for it. No additional configuration is provided
for.

Re: Unable to connect to shared printer from Vista, but XP okay

Okay, but are other print protocols documented in the manual other than
http?
