Had similar problem with Lexmark too. I had to remove Active X Control and
also temporarily switch off Firewall whilst I installed it. Has worked ok
since, so may be worth trying

Re: Windows Vista cannot connect to the printer. The specified Print m

Hello guys,

Ima go straight to the point.
If u having problems during installing printers (regardless add local/ network printer)
"Windows cannot connect to the printer.
The specified Print Monitor is unknown."

Then, there are several methods to solve it.

Method One (Editing at gpedit.msc)
  1. Go to run, type "gpedit.msc". *If prompted administrator password, type it or click continue*.
  2. Under "User Configuration", expand "Administrative Templates", expand "Control Panel", and click "Printers".
  3. Right click "Point and Print reservations" and click "Properties".
  4. Select "Enabled".
  5. If you do not want to restrict users to specific print servers, click to clear the "Users can only point and print to these server" check box.
  6. If you do not want to restrict users to print servers in their own forest, click to clear the "Users can only point and print to machines in their forest" check box. You do not have to add any servers when click to clear this check box.
  7. In the "Security Prompts" area, select Do not show warning or elevation prompt in the "When installing drivers for a new connection" box and in "When updating drivers for an existing connection box". These settings enables print drivers to be installed without credential or elevation prompts.
Method Two (Turn on "User Account Control" (UAC))
To re-enable UAC, go to Control Panel | User Accounts | User Accounts and click on “Turn User Account Control on or off”.

Applies to:
• Windows Vista Home Basic
• Windows Vista Home Premium
• Windows Vista Ultimate
• Windows Vista Business
• Windows Vista Enterprise
• Windows Vista Starter
• Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Edition
• Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition
• Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition
• Windows Vista Business 64-bit Edition
• Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit Edition

Any other problem, please google it or PM me. =]

See Alan Morris [MSFT]'s reply under "Problems adding shared printer |",
dated 8-14-07. I tried the download he mentioned
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979
) and it fixed the problem.
