| Guest | Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista OK, I bought a laptop with Vista premium. It had McAfee pre loaded. I've had really bad experiences with McAfee previously so I removed the program and loaded Norton Anti Virus which I've always liked. I'm not having any problem really except Norton keeps telling me I have an At Risk problem that says: "McAfee Personal Firewall protection is turned off. To help protect your computer, turn this feature on". Well, I can't. I don't have McAfee and I don't want McAfee. Anyone else have this issue and how can I get rid of that At Risk message within Norton? -- Judy |

| Guest | RE: Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista Hi Judy, This illustrates quite clearly why you should never run more than one anti-virus program on your computer. You should completely uninstall one before installing the other. They are deliberately difficult to uninstall on purpose to prevent malware from doing so. To uninstall McAfee, you need to follow the following instructions (taken from their website): 'Download and run the McAfee Removal tool To download the removal tool, go to https://us.mcafee.com/root/MCPR2.exe If you receive a security alert, click Yes. Click Save to download the file to a location on your computer. Navigate to the location where the file was saved. Ensure all McAfee application windows are closed. Double-click MCPR2.exe to run the removal tool. Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator. Restart your computer when prompted. Your McAfee products will not be fully removed until you restart. All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.' If you still have problems, you might be better off restoring your laptop and then using the above information to remove McAfee BEFORE installing Norton. Note that it says to save the above file to a location on your computer, but I would save it to a removeable USB flash drive so that you have it available for further use should you ever need to restore your system again to its original configuration. | Guest | Re: Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista Run the McAfee removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...e&type=TS&ia=1 Or Go to Start/Run and enter regedit and hit the Enter key. Go to: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/UNINSTALL Look for any items referring to McAfee and delete them. Then retry. Be very careful only to pick ones that belong to McAfee. -- Peter Toronto, Canada "Judy at Home" <JudyatHome@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:193BB303-4560-4690-A517-60F674A75CCC@xxxxxx

| Guest | RE: Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista I did remove McAfee through the remove programs area before installing Norton. But perhaps not everything was removed. Just another reason why I don't like McAfee. I had problems with it on a previous computer and vowed never to let it near another one. But it came pre-loaded. (grumble). Thanks for the help, I'll give the McAfee website a try. -- Judy "Dwarf" wrote:

| Guest | Re: Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista I've been told about AVG several times from others who use it and really like it. It's been on my platter to look into when my Norton subscription runs out in a couple months. Thanks for the heads up -- Judy "Pentium" wrote:

| Guest | RE: Norton Anti Virus-McAfee error message in Vista Antiviral programs are extremely difficult to remove completely from your system. The Vista installer and uninstaller do not do a good job of installing or uninstalling programs and frequently leave debris from broken or failed installs/uninstalls on your system which block normal installation processes. If you do decide to switch from Norton to another antiviral, you'll have difficulty removing Norton completely, even using the Norton Removal Tool. You can remove all bits and pieces of install/uninstall debris manually, with the help of proprietary Removal Tools and/or Windows Install Cleanup Utility, or you can use a good uninstaller program like Smarty Uninstaller which does this effortlessly. Details in the following tutorial. Unable To Install Latest Version of Program on Vista "Judy at Home" wrote:
