The "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts" file is a normal Windows files, used by the OS to help determine which specific network (and especially Internet) addresses may be access by your computer. It may be that Defender detected a suspicious entry in the file, but the file itself is essential. Perhaps if you were to post the content of the file (it's a simple plain text file), someone could determine if there is anything wrong with it. Host File FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm You say above that Windows Defender identified *two* potentially suspicious files, but only mentioned one. What was the second? -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot | ||||||||||||
