| Guest | Vista Updates On automatic updates today, my computer could not reboot and went into Startup Repair V2. It reported: Problem Signature 01 Auto Failover Problem Signature 05 Bad Driver Problem Signature 06 Bad Driver I ended up doing a system restore and got it to reboot. I turned off automatic updates as it immediately wanted to update probably the same that shut it down. I'm running Vista Ultimate in a Dell Latitude. Any suggestions? -- Bruce59 |

| Guest | RE: Vista Updates Did Windows Update install a new driver for you? If so, which? Why don't you do a manual scan of Windows Update and see what it proposes. --- Your question may already be answered in Windows Vista Security: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047...otectyourwi-20 "bruce59" wrote:

| Guest | Re: Vista Updates Turned off automatic updates via the Windows Update Control Panel applet or Disabling the Windows Update service via the Services console ? If you've Disabled the WU service then there's no need to boot to Safe Mode. Otherwise, boot to Safe Mode and remove the contents of these subfolders WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache You may need to show hidden files, folders, and system files to view the above locations: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#vista Restart to normal Windows mode. When the yellow icon [or whatever it is in Vista] appears in the Notification area, click on it and see which updates are being offered. Write them down and then click Cancel. Head over to either the Microsoft Update Catalog : http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx or the MS Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/S...displaylang=en and search for the updates by their KB numbers. Download and SAVE them. When you're done, install them with the browser and all programs closed. From what I've been reading in the Windows Update newsgroup, there is apparently an issue with some Vista systems not having all the updates downloaded but the OS thinks it has and thus attempts to install the phantom ones repeatedly. Some systems can not be stopped from rebooting as if a bad driver had been installed. MowGreen [MVP 2003-2008] =============== *-343-* FDNY Never Forgotten =============== bruce59 wrote:

| Guest | Re: Vista Updates Thanks for the suggestions. The update that shuts things down is KB944533 which is the Cumulative Security Update for IE7. It looks like a lot of people are having trouble with this. I'm obviously not installing it. Thanks again for your help with this. -- Bruce59 "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote:
