Security warning for EZVirus every time I boot computer

Every time I boot my computer, I have to give EZVirus tray application
permission to start. Is there some way I can avoid this by giving it
permanent permission? It is a pain, as the computer stops booting until I
grant the permissionl.

Hello,

I think Microsoft is going to make it so that programs will silently fail
instead of asking for permission during startup. This is a case where the
program you are using isn't designed for Vista, and you will have to wait
until they release a Vista-compliant version before it will work correctly.

Unfortunately, Vista does not allow programs to be marked as "always run
with admin permissions", because if such a facility were allowed, malware
would be able to run such programs in the background and use them to bypass
security restrictions, thereby rendering the security invalid.

Imagine the case where you marked the command prompt to always run with
admin permissions. Malware could then start a command prompt without you
knowing about it, and be able to take over your computer using this command
prompt.

You should find as we move closer to RTM and afterword that programs will be
redesigned for Vista and will not require startup programs to run as
administrator, and that this problem will eventually disappear entirely,
although it will take time.

I am running Avast! 4.7 in Vista 5384.4 x64 as a standard user and do not
get the prompt. Perhaps you might try this AV application? They offer a
one-year free subscription for Vista.

I was just thinking...
Won't having a system's anti-virus program (or other security type program)
"fail silently" be an extremely bad idea?

Yes ... but it's also a bad idea to allow a possible DOS attack (setting a
bunch of programs that need admin permissions to start up).

And I presume (tho I may be wrong) that the antivirus solution is still
running in the background, its just the UI (the bit that lives in the system
tray) that is asking for permission, and would be failed silently.

I see what you mean, and I had not thought about the fact that the AV
solution could still be running without the tray application. Thanks for

Thanks for the response. I was running Avast with no problems (so can't
figure out why EZVirus is having one) but wanted to try another virus app
when I had several failures while using a tool which checks whether you're
security apps are working well. The CA EZVirus that I'm using is the one
that MS referred me to on it's web site, so it should be Vista compliant. I
may go back to Avast in the future...but EZVirus does seem to stop some of
the changes that Avast was allowing. I'll test again.
