Vista won't start after updates

Hi!
I have a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. Everything was going
fine today until I clicked for updates to be installed and then to re-start
after the updates, as normal. However, now when I start the computer the
Windows screen says 'Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3. 0% complete' then it
shuts down and automatically restarts with the same message. This has been
going on for hours and I cannot get into Windows or do anything else. Is this
a virus? Any idea what I do? Please help as I am terrified my computer is now
dead....

Re: Vista won't start after updates

You can try pressing F8 before Windows boots, and after the BIOS screen
(just keep tapping the F8 key). This should bring you to a menu that has
"Last Known Configuration". Select that, and it should boot up again. Then
try reinstalling the updates again.

Re: Vista won't start after updates

"Keyser" - hi, I have a Fujitsu laptop and was having the same problem as
Shirley. Linked to your fix, at http://www.anguas.com/?p=47 and followed
their instructions by restoring to a checkpoint before the last windows
update. I was able to then restart my computer. I followed the their
suggested download link,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
and when I downloaded it and ran it I got a message that said "The update
does not apply to your system"? where do I go from here? did I miss
something?

Re: Vista won't start after updates

I have the same problem re my ACER computer not starting after the machine trying to download upgrades, the messages are as follows-
"stage 1 of 3 0% complete", once it tries to download only 2 of the 3 downloads gets to 100% then the machine tries to restart, message then reads "computer was unable to restart" and start up repair kicks in then the "stage 1 off 3 0% starts again.
We have tried hitting F8 to restore but it did not work.
After the computer tries to restart in the diagnostics there is a Boot Critical File - "C:\ntoskrnl.exe (corrupt).
Any ideas how to fix the machine, it has been two days now without computer!!
Thanks
Sheila

What you have is a major problem installing Vista Service Pack 1.
Microsoft has set up FREE help to fix it!
The 3 options are in their link above.
Good luck!
