windows defender and avast virus problems

I'm running Windows XP and Vista on two seperate partitions on the same
computer. I have cable internet and am connected by ethernet wire. I have
no connectivity problems whatsover with XP. When I'm running Vista, I always
get the "Your computer might be at risk" warning and when I go to the
security center it says that I don't have antivirus software and my windows
defender is not turned on. I do have avast and it is up to date. When I
open windows defender it says it is running and up to date. THEN I get
kicked offline and can't get back on again, even in XP without totally
unhooking and unplugging and reinstalling all my cables and wires! What the
hey! I have screenshots of the warnings, etc. I am talking about but do not
see how to attach them to this post.

RE: windows defender and avast virus problems

Have you installed Avast to both partitions?
I have a different AV on my XP hard drive than I have on the Vista drive and
Defender reports both of them but only one is installed for Vista.
Connection problems did you install your LAN again with Vista from the
motherboard disc?

RE: windows defender and avast virus problems

Wow! Yes to the first question and no to the second. Thank you so much for
the most helpful response! I will definitely try reinstalling the LAN. As
for the AV, I've uninstalled it and reinstalled a fresh one from the Avast
website on both partitions and still the same problem. Then when I go to try
to get PC-ciillin or something else, I can't get back online to get it. With
your solution as least I can stay online long enough to try a different AV.
Thanks!

Re: windows defender and avast virus problems

Have you tried running without both Windows Defender and your antivirus?
Are you behind a router? I think it is quite possible that this is a
networking issue, and unrelated to either Windows Defender or the antivirus.

Re: windows defender and avast virus problems

I reinstalled my nvidia networking drivers in Vista and then went to the
Security Center and told it I would monitor my virus and spyware software
myself and now everything seems to be fine. Thanks.
