Could you try manually updating it and see what happens? The instructions are
    at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923159/

The error 80070005 means you have a permissions problem. There are several
possible reasons for this. One is if you have two (or more) firewalls
installed. You don't happen to have Norton Internet Security, or some other
security suite, installed do you? If so, you may have both that firewall and
the Windows firewall running, which could cause this problem. Do you know how
to check whether the firewall is running in that suite? You can check the
state of the Windows Vista built-in firewall in the Windows Firewall Control
    Panel.

Interesting. I wish I knew why this seems to happen with Norton because the
Symantec installer should be smart enough to disable the Windows firewall.

Go ahead and disable the Windows Firewall and try updating. If that works,
would you please let me know? You can contact me off the newsgroup by going
to my blog (http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper) and clicking the Contact
    link.

To disable the Windows Firewall do this:
    1. Open the Control Panel
    2. Open the Windows Firewall control panel
    3. Click "Change settings."
    4. Accept the elevation prompt
    5. Check the "Off (not recommended)" radio button.
    6. Click OK.

Now try updating Defender. Please let me know if this works. I would tell
you how to disable the Norton firewall, but I do not have it, so I do not
    know.

Norton is likely causing your problem.
Replace Norton with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling Norton is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it. If it doesn't solve the problem, get rid of Norton anyway. Norton is
known to cause many problems which don’t always appear immediately.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

It's called "360" because Symantec's goal is complete ownership of your
computer, and with even less communication about what it's trying to do or
ways to configure it than ever before (which would only interfere with its
goal.) That, along with Symantec's famous technical support, makes Norton
360 a disaster that I would only install on Granny's computer if she was
    going to disinherit me.

I thought it was called 360 because that's the number of days you'll be
unable to use your computer the way you want it to this year.
