Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

When I click on Updater.exe it tells me that an unidentified program wants
access to my computer. Since it's unidentified, I don't know if I want it or
not, so I've always denied it. But to have this happen about every 20 minutes
if very annoying.
How can I find out what the program is and/or to stop the updater from
flashing so
often? Thanks

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

Hi,

Where do you click on this Updater.exe?
The System Tray?

It could be lots of things so you need to narrow down where you are
performing this action. It could be your Printer software, Antivirus,
Spyware, or many other apps asking you for permission. I do commend you for
denied it and seeking help first. What do you have running in your System
Tray?.

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

SG: Thanks for your reply. It is flashing in the bottom task bar, next to
programs that I have open. Any ideas?

What programs do you have open when this happens?
Does it happen when no programs are open?

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

Yes, it happens even if no programs are open. As soon as the computer
boots up, before any programs are open and before I connect to the
internet, it can be their flashing.

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

Hi,

OK, so it appears it's something in your Run branch in the registry. To help
find this you need to copy/paste in your reply what you have loading. To do
this open Regedit by clicking Start then in the "Start Search" box type
Regedit, you will see it appear at the top. Right click that and select Run
as Administrator. Scroll down to the following branch....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

With the Run branch highlighted select on the file menu, File_Export and
save it to your Desktop as a txt file.

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

I found that if I do Cntr/Alt/Delete from my desktop, then start Task Manager,
it is the only thing running in the applications tab. Click End Task. It goes
away for that session of computer use. Next time I turn on the computer
it's there flashing again. If I do nothing it multiplies.

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

Hi,

In order to help find what program is calling up Updater.exe please follow
my previous post and reply with the results from the Registry. Task manager
tells us nothing, we know it's running, we need to see what might be calling
it up.

The updater reference could be from either flash or
shockwave., but in order to tell more accurately we need the
contents of the Run keys. They will be under CurrentUser or
LocalMachine branches. Locate
Software/Microsoft/Windows/Run in both branches and copy the
contents. Then type these 2 keys into the email message as
the respective branches they are in. [CurrentUser] then list
1 to 10 underneath (if needed). If you have RealPlayer
installed, the first time you access Real Guide, the player
requests a flash player update for its guide page items.

Re: Updater.exe keeps flashing in task bar

Thank you both for responding. It was an easy fix once the "details" option was
found with the flashing message. Then I could see what the program was, I
recognized it, went to that software and disabled the notification option. Now
no more flashing reminder in my task bar.
