Security Centre

Every time I turn on my computer it tells me that the Windows Security Centre
is at risk. I have Nortons IS installed as my Anti Virus program, and I know
this overrides the WSC, but how do I stop the Windows icon from showing my
computer is at risk when I start up.

I read that the Windows SC is only a warning, it does not save you from
viruses, is that correct?

Re: Security Centre

The problem is that when I turn the computer on, it comes up with the red
icon down at the bottom of the screen, which, when I click on it, tells me
Windows SC is turned off. I turn it on, but there doesnt seem to be a
default place where I can turn it on permanently. Pain having to turn it on
every time I turn on the computer.
Any suggestions how to do this?

Windows Security Centre is just a facility for controlling various
security aspects, it doesn't of itself provide a security function. Are
you sure that the warning isn't WSC advising you about some security
feature that is turned off ?
If you open WSC does it show some problem with Firewall, Updates,
Anti-virus, UAC etc. ?

RE: Security Centre

Maybe I am not explaining myself very well. When I turn on my computer, a
red icon shows in bottom right corner saying that my WSC security is at risk.
I click on it, and it tells me to turn it on. This makes the red icon go
away.

What I want to know is, is there a way of either turning this WSC on or off
permanently? Surely you don't have to go through this process every day? It
has only been a problem for 4 days now, so there must be a glitch somewhere I
can't find.

There are no messages in WSC when I open it, it just tells me to turn the
security on. (There is no button to click "apply" here, making it
permanent.)

Does NIS override this WSC or am I doubling up on security?

Hello The Old Moos,
My suggestions :
1.) Get rid of Norton. It is power hungry. Will turn Vista defender and firewall off.
2.) Get Avast or Avg. They are free and they do a good job.
3.) Keep the built-in Vista defender and firewall on. They are designed for the job. Don't need a 3rd party program to intrude unless your machine is for business. Then never mind what I had just said.

Re: Security Centre

The problem seems to have resolved itself. Don't have to turn anything on
or off anymore, all working spiffingly!

Thanks for the info!

Jolly good - if you open 'Help and Support' and type 'Security Center'
in the box ( US spelling ), hit the search button and then click on
'Using the Security Center' at the top of the list you will get loads
more info.

Tom
