| | User Account I got a windows vista with an existing admin account - OwnerPC my little sister created a user account (Mickey) and assigned a password in it. Now everytime i try to install something or run windows updates, it prompts the user password for Mickey (Enter user password for Mickey) But after typing the correct password, it says, user doesnt have any access or isnt authorized for this kind of operation, only enter an administrator password for this. But there isnt any administrator password for it though any help will be highly appreciated! thanks! |

If you don't want Mickey to know your psw, the set up another admin account called BUFFALOBob or something with a psw and let her use that admin account to run as admin, from her Standard user account. The UAC box should allow one to choose what Admin user-id and psw to use when the prompt is issued. |

If the account you are using in not an Admin account and Mickey is not either, because it is certainly telling you the Mickey doesn't have Admin rights, the what user account is Admin on the machine? If there is no admin account on that machine that you can use to logon to that machine as Admin, then you are flat-out toasted, and you might as well get the install DVD out and reinstall the O/S, because that may be the only way to get out of your situation. |

If you have a retail version of the Vista install DVD and it's not an upgrade version but a full version, you can do an upgrade over the top of the existing O/S for sure, which will lay the O/S back down leaving everything intact. All of your settings will be there and all your programs will be there with nothing broken. You might be able to set an Admin account during the upgrade over the top install process. I think you can even tell the upgrade retail version of the install DVD to do the upgrade over the top of the existing O/S too. If you can do the upgrade and it works for you, then you'll have to re-apply the SP1 and the Windows updates. If Vista was preinstalled, then you don't have a retail version of the Vista install DVD. |

| | Re: User Account Have you tried safe mode? If the last admin account is demoted or deleted I believe the real admin account is supposed to be reactivated and available through safe mode.
