AV and Firewall apps

Can someone provide a list of which AV and Firewall apps work with Vista
5728?

I read the post concerning AVG Free needing to be installed using
Compatability mode but was curious what else may be available. I always
preffered Zone Alarm but when I attempt to install v 6.5.722 I get the error
message this product has issues with Windows Vista.

TIA,

Kuane

Re: AV and Firewall apps

I can't give a complete list but AVAST Home Edition (free) Build 4.7.892 is
working like a charm here with Vista Build RC1 (5728) in both 32-bit and
64-bit modes.

I'm beginning to wonder why I ever paid for an anti-virus program

I just got an email invitation from Symantec this morning to download a
supposedly Vista-compatible version of Norton Internet Security but it is
32-bit only. Pfft! (lol)
They are also due to release, "any day real soon now" a 32-bit bit Vista
version of Norton Anti-Virus for testing.

Re: AV and Firewall apps

And,
No need for a 3rd party firewall in Vista.
unlike XP- MSFT did their homework on firewalls for Vista.
To get past the dumbed down GUI just go to start>in the search bar-type
in firewall;and choose -firewall with advanced settings

Re: AV and Firewall apps

I would gladly pay for anyone's antivirus before I would take
Norton/Symantec "ANYTHING" for free.

Re: AV and Firewall apps

Yeah, sure, and go get a diploma or 2 in network security just so you
understand half the words in that panel. The firewall needs to be easily
configurable for Joe-6-packs or it's useless.
Most AV work in Vista, mercifully not Symanthec's though. Unfortunately UAP
and Defender get in the way, so they need to go.

Re: AV and Firewall apps

Cyanna,
Waste your money if you want to.
Even the basic Vista firewall settings are secure.

Re: AV and Firewall apps

Avast works and is free. AVG's trial works, is slicker than Avast but only 1
month free. trend Micro OC-cillin works but gums up the machine something
cronic at startup. Norton NO! They just ended my XP 1 year subscription after
200 days - reason "You have re-installed it too often" Grr! Colin

Re: AV and Firewall apps

No need to waiste any money, Jeff. There are very good firewalls available
for free. There will be for Vista also.
And no firewall is good unless outgoing connections can be monitored and
configured. The basic Vista firewall doesn't do that.

Re: AV and Firewall apps

The basic Vista firewall can be made to do that. It is the first 2-way
firewall supplied by Microsoft.
