Actually, "run as administrator" fixes all the problems (i.e. not just some
of them), and I have given the subset of applications that have recently
acquired these file access problems permanent permission to use a full
administrator access token. However, this is less than ideal because of the
unavoidable Vista dialog box asking for permission to continue that appears
every time you start one of these applications.

Is there a better solution?
