Hi,
Based on my knowledge, Windows Vista require NetBIOS over TCP/IP port 139
since Windows Vista does not add the RAS adapter GUID for SMB to the
lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, and SMB registry keys. It's a known bug on
Windows Vista and it have been fixed in Windows Vista SP1. So, Windows
Vista SP1 doesn't require NetBIOS over TCP/IP port 139 to connect to
fileshares over VPN connections.
For your reference:
Windows Vista clients cannot access network shares over a VPN or dial-up
connection

You cannot access SMB shares on a corporate network through a Remote Access
Service (RAS) connection from a computer that is running Windows Vista

Hope it helps.

I have just checked the registry keys, but my LanManServer and
LanManWorkstation do not contain the VPN guids. I am running Vista SP1. How
could this happen? My installation is clean Vista SP1 64bit installation. No
config migration. I can send you the relevant registry keys if you are
interested.
thank you very much.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
On the page of KB933468
(http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;933468), we can
find the following information.
Registry information
To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any
changes to the registry.
Modifying registry keys is a workaround. Windows Vista SP1 includes
KB933468 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc749061.aspx), so the
current situation(No changes in registry) should be normal.
Thank you for your understanding.
Hope it helps.

the reaso why I ask is that my own Vista SP1 64bit computer actually cannot
access the fileshares unless there is NetBIOS enabled on the VPN interface
and the target computer has NetBIOS enabled and exceptions in its local
firewall opened.
