Thanks for the advice PA Bear, but it appears that that forum is web
only and is not part of my TechNet Managed Newsgroup support. I'm cross
posting to Vista.Security for now so I hope Microsoft will answer my

Regarding the Internet Explorer issue, could you please disable UAC to test
the issue? If the issue was resolved after disabling UAC, the problem is a
known bug on IE7. Our engineers are working on it and it should be fixed in
future.

There are three workarounds:

1. Disable Internet Explorer Protected Mode.
2. Add the \\server and all of the domain names for each of the defined
shortcuts to the Trusted site.
3. Install IE8.

I was waiting to see if the June IE update would solve this issue,
applying MS09-019 did not solve the problem. The other suggestion,
disabling UAC did allow me to open the Internet shortcuts from the mapped
drive. UAC is required so I have re-enabled it for my daily usage.

As for the three work-arounds:

1. I do not want to loose the security benefits of IE Protected Mode
2. Adding file://127.0.0.1 to the Local intranet zone did not solve the
issue; adding file:\\localhost is not allowed IE prevents this and states it
is an invalid wildcard sequence, adding file:\\localhost\myshare is also not
allowed. Changing localhost to the actual COMPUTERNAME does allow the
addition to the Intranet zone file://computername/myshare, but this still
does not allow the shortcuts to be opened. Moving the addition from the
Intranet zone to the Trusted sites zone did not resolve the issue.
3. IE 8 is not an upgrade option at this time.

Please provide me more information about the pending hotfix for this known
bug, my assumption that it would be fixed as part of the IE security
patching was not correct this month and I do require a solution in the near
future.

I have a drive mapped to a share on the same computer: X: mapped
\\localhost\myshare local folder C:\A\myshare. I have full control of the
folder C:\A\myshare as well as the file share \\localhost\myshare . After I
upgraded to Vista SP2, I am no longer able to launch (double click) any
internet shortcuts located on X:. If IE is already open & running, there is
no error message displayed (no new windows or IE tabs are opened either).
If IE is closed, this error is displayed:

"Windows Internet Explorer
Cannot find
'file:///X:/sub%20foldername/folder2/folder3/internetshortcutname.url'.
Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.
OK"

If I launch the exact same file from the non-shared folder "C:\A\Myshare\sub
foldername\folder2\folder3\internetshortcutname.url" IE opens the link
normally. The link properties are not corrupted, the URL field of the
shortcut is valid when accessed via C: or X:

Environment:
Internet Explorer: 7.0.6002.18005
Vista Ultimate x86 SP2: Version 6.0.6002
Workgroup computer, not a member of a domain

I assume this is either a bug in Vista SP2 or a new feature that I must have
missed in the SP2 documentation. Can this behavior be changed so I can
launch shortcuts to URL's from mapped drives again?
