Windows Defender will not initialize and work

05/21/2009

1. My Windows Defender does not intialize and work.

2. When I tried to reinstall Windows Defender I got "Windows Installer Information" message:

You do not need to install this software because Windows Defender is included in Windows Vista. YOu can access Defender from the Security section of the Windows Control Panel.

3. But when I try to access Windows Defender by clicking on Windows Defender in Windows Security Center I get a "Windows Defender" Error Message:

Application failed to initialize: 0x80070002.

4. How can I fix this problem.

RE: Windows Defender will not initialize and work

hi

first clear your event log - Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event
Viewer

expand windows logs, select Applications, select clear logs from action pane
then select system, select clear logs from the action pane

restart pc, once up and running view the two logs for errors and post them
here.

also check and make sure the windows defender service is running by -

Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services - scroll down to find
Windows Defender - double click the service, under gerneral tab - Startup
type: set to automatic, under Log On tab - Log on as: select Local System
account.

also check your system for corrupt files -

Start/All Programs/Accessories/ - locate Command Prompt, right click and
select run as administrator, once open scan system files by using this switch

sfc /scannow < this will scan all system files, to view help
type as follows

sfc /?
