Newbie about Vista

Hello!

May be my questions will be strange for you for which I apologise !

I have been working as an IT for some years and here the moment comes in
which I should learn again . Windows Vista is the new one that is still a fog
for me . I haven't tested the BETA (due to lack of resourses and time) and
I'm waiting for the final version on 30 January.

However , I started receiving questions about which are or less technical .
I know very well the public things (available on forums or in the MS official
site) but the technical is thing to be learned . I have a friend of mine who
is now having Vista (a new built but don't know which one exactly) and he is
having problems with svchost.exe but I'm helpless .

So my questions and my requests are :
if you could describe me more Windows Firewall (in Vista) , the way it works
, modes , settings , is it intrusive and things like that .

Can you tell me more about Windows Defender , is it cooperating well or what
and is it intrusive . Can it be completely disabled (for example its service
to be disabled like in Win XP) because I don't want it , for example .

Could you tell me more about IE7 and especially about its "Protected mode"

Does Vista has Winsock , how can it be repaired (reinstalled) and is Winsock
still the name . Does it use the same commands like in Win XP ?

Wondering which built will be most appropriate ? I mean to start with I'm
planning to buy and install it only at home (the office will wait Vista SP1)
but wondering between Home basic and Home Premium . Home basic has networking
, it supports connection with LAN / WLAN / DSL , right ? I have read Home
Premium has "Advanced networking" and have seen some nice screenshots from
this but Home basic lacks Advanced networking , as far as I have read in a
magazine . So if you could make it cleared , it would be great :-)

And one, more :
For my laptop I have OEM Windows XP Home edition . I can use discounted
price of Win Vista to buy an upgrade DVD but what will that upgrade DVD give
me ?
I mean everytime I reinstall Windows , will I need to install first XP and
then use Vista upgrade disk (which would be quite stupid) or this upgrade DVD
gives me the change to send the XP CD in the bin and with it I repair and
fully install/reinstall the new Vista .

Thanks very very much for the answers !

Regards!
