Uninstalling Norton 2006

I just went through a Windows XP Home -> Vista Home Premium upgrade
and it went fairly smoothly with the exception of Norton Anti-virus.
The instructions said to update your anti-virus program and then
disable it while you are upgrading to Vista. (It should have said
uninstall the anti-virus program) After the Vista upgrade it
complained about Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and it recommended the
download of a newer 2007 version.

We downloaded the 2007 version but the install kept failing. I think
it is because the 2006 version would not uninstall.

I went into the control panel and tried to uninstall the 2006 version
and it almost completed but could not stop some service. Once you
click cancel it tried to undo the uninstall and it is not very
successful and leaves the system a mess.

What I need is a way to manually uninstall Norton anti-virus 2006 or a
way to just stop it from starting up so that Norton 2007 can install.
Anyone? Is there a Safe Mode with Vista?

Al

Re: Uninstalling Norton 2006

You will find it difficult to manually remove Norton. Visit the Norton
website and search for the Norton Removal Tool. If you can't find it ( I
don't have the link to hand) visit my website http://vistasupport.mvps.org
click on the contact me tab and email me and I'll send you a copy of the
tool. If you need to email me for this application please follow the mailing
instructions regarding putting vista support in the subject line, otherwise
your mail might get deleted.

The Norton Removal Tool will remove all Norton products. Once Norton has
been uninstalled find another anti virus, for that matter use the free
version of AVG http://free.grisoft.com but dump Norton. I don't use Norton
nor will I use Norton products. They are more trouble than they are worth.

Thanks you very much for the good advice! I got the tool from
Symantec and it successfully removed all their stuff. Right now AVG
Anti-Virus Free Edition is scanning the computer. :-)

Hopefully after the scan the I can get rid of that Red shield with the
red X. The little old lady that owns this laptop has a phobia about
red Xs anywhere on her machine.

Re: Uninstalling Norton 2006

Go to the Symantec Site and download a "Clean program" which will
allow you to load 2007. 2006 will not work with Vista. You have to
go buy 2007 for Vista and when you open the box you will find that
you have to go to a Symantec site and download the Vista compatible
version and then use the CD Key from the one you just bought (2007)
and then it will activate.

Re: Uninstalling Norton 2006

Symantec offer free upgrade from Norton 2006 to Norton 2007 as long as you
have active subscription:
Norton AV -
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...06092513345446
Norton Internet Security -
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...06092616462646
You can use the Norton 2006 product key to activate the Norton 2007. Just
uninstall Norton 2006 then install Norton 2007.
I recommend using Norton Removal Tool in removing Norton 2006 -
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
Their announcement is in
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoff...rowan_trollope
or just go to http://www.symantec.com/windowsvistasupport and select Norton
2006. The page will direct Nortn AV and Internet Security 2006 users to
free upgrade to Norton 2007 which works for Vista.
