PrtScn of UAC

I'm writing documentation for end users.

How can I do a PrntScn (or capture to the clipboard) the UAC pop-ups?

At a minimum you'll need to disable the Secure Desktop which can
be done through Group Policy.

If you don't mind a bit of lateral thinking you could use two computers and
remote desktop, or a virtual PC to capture screenshots of one machine from
the other. I've done this and it works well enough.

Re: PrtScn of UAC

I use the wonderful free Irfanview for screen captures.

You have a choice of what it captures out of what you see and the
default "capture" is CTRL + F11 I don't know if it will work with
those pop-ups but it will certainly pick up error screens if you make
sure they have the foreground focus.

Do a google on Irfanview -- no-one should be without it!

Re: PrtScn of UAC

I use Snagit by Techsmith, www.techsmith.com. This is a fairly complex
program but it does wonders for documentation and presentations.

Here is a free one to take simple shots.

Are you saying you've actually caught screenshots of the UAC "dimmed
desktop" and popup with SnagIt?

Capturing from a virtual machine worked with SnagIt. Thanks!!

(Note to other posters: the usual capture programs like SnagIt seem to be
disabled when the UAC dialog is visible.)

Re: PrtScn of UAC

I would hope so. Try a digital camera. The UAC confirmation screen is
supposed to be done on a secure desktop so that no other program can inject
themselves into that activity and fake an OK response.

Re: PrtScn of UAC

The only problem is that you cannot create screenshots of a UAC prompt if
you have secure desktop enabled. Secure Destop will prevent Irfanview from
running at that time. However, you can create screen shots from Virtual PC
2007 because it is outside the guest operating system, and can run while the
guest is using secure desktop.

This is a feature that prevents bad programs from answering those prompts
for you. Same applies to the login screen.

Not something (secure desktop) that I have run into to the best of my
knowledge -- I must see how mine is set up. In Security Center?
