Need REAL admin access, need to get into Documents and Settings ec

OK,

So how do I get a REAL admin account created in Vista. I have enabled the
"built in" administrator account, and I can log in to it. But even logged in
as an admin, I can not access the "Documents and Settings" folders. THIS IS
NOT COOL!!!!!! :-( It is inexcusable for Microsoft to keep me, THE OWNER, of
the system from having FULL control at all times.

I have a large number of workstations, over 200, that I have to support. I
am working with Vista Enterprise. I do a lot of customization to the
workstations after I do the initial Windows setup and install. I use .bat
files to do a lot of the copying of all of my pre-configured folders, icons,
etc with these .bat files, and one of the places I need to be able to copy to
is the desktop of the various users, which is stored in Documents and
Settings.

I also have found that while trouble shooting, I will often need access to
the users Documents and Settings folder.

As things seem to currently stand, it seems that Microsoft has really
screwed up the system and in doing so has made it impossible to Completely
support Vista, ect., ect., ect.

Wake up Microsoft, you messed it up BIG TIME this time!!!!!!

Thanks for your help,

Ralph Malph

Hi,

You can check that Documents and Settings has permission for Everyone to
List folder/Read data set up to Deny. You can remove this permission.

Notice that in fact Documents and Settings is only shortcut to Users folder
placed on root drive, where even non-powered users have permissions to read
etc..

Hello,

You should not remove the Deny permission on the documents and settings
junction, or any other application compatability junction on your system.

This deny permission is in place to prevent applications from
malfunctioning. Removing it could cause problems, possibly leading to data
loss.

Hi,

Right this junction is used to compatibility with legacy apps
e.g. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480152.aspx

And probably some of that legacy apps will not work corectly any longer if
you delete Documents and settings but it rather doesn't matter if you change
that permission - it's my private opinion of course.

Re: Need REAL admin access, need to get into Documents and Settings ec

Hello,

Respectfully, it does matter.

There are junctions that point back on themselves that create a
hall-of-mirror effect that could crash applications.

Also, the behavior of deleting a folder that contains a junction is
undefined - some applications will delete the junction itself, while others
will delete the CONTENTS of the folder that the junctions point to. This
could lead to unexpected and damaging results

(example: deleting a windows.old folder that contains a previous
installation of Windows Vista will contain some junctions that point to
folders for the CURRENT installation of windows - if this deny permission is
not set, and you try to delete that windows.old folder, you could easily
wipe out important files and settings from your current windows
installation).

And, many applications may not handle seeing the same files in more than one
folder correctly, which could cause them to misbehave in unexpected and
possibly damaging ways. (ex. a backup program backing up the same files
multiple times).
