Firewall Rules - Outbound

Hi,

I set my wireless router as a public network; Then I set VISTA'S public
firewall profile to block all outbound connections; Then I set manually one
by one my allowed outbound programs(new rules).

My issue: In this scenario VISTA cannot contact base and all auto updates
are impossible.
To bypass I temporarily set my network as PRIVATE and just because that
profile is still factory default all programs, including auto update, can
connect to the web.
Which Vista's app may I allow in the firewall rules, when my network profile
is public, to let auto update do it's job ?
Could anyone gently explain a solution to this case?

Best regards,
Tim

Google is your friend, try "vista firewall allow windows update
site:microsoft.com" (minus quotes).

Create a Custom outbound rule, allowing the Service call windows update
service to pass through

Re: Firewall Rules - Outbound

This is a link to the Vista TechNet page. It has basic trouble shooting tips
for Firewall. You can also look at your firewall log file too see what
outbound traffic your are blocking. The file is
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log. You need to log into
the administrator account to view this file. You also have to enable
firewall logging. Hope this helps some.
