Windows Defender Out of Date

Windows Security Center started telling me that Windows Defender is out of
date. When I try to update Windows Defender I get the following error:

The Program Can't Check for Definition Updates
Error Found: 0x80240029

Definition version is 1.15.2227.3 created on 1/31/2007 at 8:19PM

Using Windows Vista Home Premium OEM. Also using NOD32 anti-virus. Thanks
for any help...

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

Zenmota,

0x80240029 -2145124311 WU_E_INVALID_PRODUCT_LICENSE A product with an
invalid license was found on the system.

Looks like you have an invalid license key for Windows Vista, which makes
your copy of Vista illegal.

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

I bought my copy of Windows Vista (OEM version) from Newegg, use the license
key that was on the sticker that came with the DVD and after installing to a
clean hard drive it did the validation thing just fine. I even went to the
Genuine Microsoft Software web page and had it Validate Windows and it says
everything is fine. You would think that if I had an illegal copy of Vista,
it wouldn't validate or it would be nagging me to death about not being
legal.

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

I don't believe that code indicates what some folks are stating. However,
I'm not sure what the root issue is.

Have you gone to Windows or Microsoft Update, and applied all offered
critical updates? When you do that, are updates to Windows Defender
offered?

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

When I first installed Vista I did the Windows Update thing and there was an
update for Windows Defender. But after that, no updates for Windows Defender
every showed up even if I checked using Windows Update.

I did a search and check some other newsgroups and found that other people
are having the same problem and they all have legal copies of Vista.

This is what I found out and did. I found a link to download the definition
file and install it myself instead of using Windows Update. I then turned
off Auto Updates and when I ran Windows Update 3 updates showed up that were
not showing up when Auto Updates was turned on. 1 of those updates was
Windows Defender definition update. Downloaded and installed those 3
updates. I then added Windows Defender to the Exceptions list in Windows
Firewall and then turned Auto Updates back on.

Seems to be working ok now, but will have to wait till these definitions get
old to see for sure. Must be some kind of a bug.....

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

I sure don't see what that turning off autoupdate, etc, would do--but
obviously, for you, it did! This does sound like a bug, but I'd like to
figure out more about what the quickest fix path is.

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

Same issue here - legit Vista Ultimate "The program can't check for
definition updates" 0x80240029.

No updates offered on Windows Update ?

Zenmota - where did you find the update file ?

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Windows Defender Out of Date

Try turning off Auto-Updates (also un-check Use Microsoft Update if you have
it) and then check for updates. When I did this, it showed updates for
Defender that were not showing when Auto-Update was turned on. I also added
Windows Defender to the Windows firewall Exceptions (not sure if this
helped).

Here's the link for the update file:
