Vista - Windows Live OneCare

Is Windows One LiveCare in the beta stage or is it in its final public
version?

It's been released for the x86 Vista.

It is only for 32 bit operating systems. It is one of the poorest antivirus
programs on the market. It is very overpriced for as little as it catches.

I'm glad that you added the bit about reading the reviews. The first sentence is
correct. Your second sentence is harsh and unsupported. I'll agree that OneCare
could stand to improve in the detection and removal of some threats, but the
reviews and tests have shown OneCare to be pretty decent. The most recent test
was failed by less than 1% as a 100% success rate is required to "pass." Pricing
is also reasonable. If you live in the US, CompUSA has it on sale with rebates
this week for 1 cent.

I downloaded it and recieved the 90 day free trial, and I seem to like it, I
use to have McAfee free with AOL, but they don't have a Vista version out
yet, so I decided to get this, b/c I head bad things about Norton. Don't know
how true everything is, but hey. I actually like everything that One Care
does.

Read the reviews on PC Magazine, InfoWorld, and any other favorite major
magazine that has published a review of computer security software -
AntiVirus, AntiSpam, Software Firewalls, Hardware Firewalls, etc. Decide
what you need to protect your system(s).

I would recommend, as a minimum, a hardware firewall if you have DSL or
Cable such as Netgear, Linksys, or D-Link. This will stop most attacks on
your system. If you still use dialup, then you need a software firewall.
Then you need a good, frequently updated (several times a day) AntiVirus.
If you need a software firewall, get the paired version to remove conflicts.
You need a good AntiSpam such as the free Ad-Ware. You have to do manual
scans with it.

Some of the all-in-one AntiVirus and Firewall packages do AntiSpam too. I
think Norton's Internet Security offers all in one. The latest version has
full Vista support including 64-bit versions. It also has been rated a much
lower impact package compared to previous versions. It has been said that
it just takes the safest path automatically instead of pestering the user to
make decisions they aren't equipped to understand.

I have used One Care since last July 2006. It has worked great on my XP
machines. When I updated from XP Profressional to Vista Ultimate I have had
lots of problems with One Care (though I still like the program.) I have
been on the phone, online chats, had techs remotely control by computer,
used email etc. with Vita techs as well as One Care Techs (escalated in both
cases) for many hours and to date no fix. It seems, in my case, the One
Care Firewall does not allow Windows Vista update to connect. When I disble
the One Care Firewall no problems with updating. I am still waiting for the
One Care techs to get back to me. Vista tech stated it was a One Care
problem ( I don't disagree with this.) Anyway I think One Care is a decent
product, but in my case it has a glitch. Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. I appreciate your help and

In the advanced settings there is options to allow and block programs, I was
using the XP version and while in any other account besides Admin I was not
allowed to make changes to the firewall rules. Might be the same for Vista,
but when I logged into Admin there would be a popup that asked if I wanted to
allow or block the programs internet access...awesome feature.

It would be nice if "Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR)" applied to
antivirus products as well, for an extra layer of protection.

The problem was solved by deleting One Care and then using the One Care
Clean Up utility. I then restarted the computer reinstalled One Care and
all is well. I got the fix from the One Care Forum online. It was for a
little different issue but it worked for mine.
