Failed to migrate Virus Defs. error message.

I downloaded Norton Anti Virus. The LiveUpdates were successfuly installed.
When I launch the Norton Status, this is what shows at the top of the
interface; "Norton Anti Virus needs to be configured". When I click on the
"fix now", I get another error message saying; "Failed to migrate Virus
Defs." It asks me to "reboot" to "launch the product" but I still get all of
the mentioned errors all over again. Even my Windows Security Center "cant be
started". (I get that message when I try to turn the security center on. They
are all turned "off").
I have contacted Symantec and they gave me links to upgrade the Anti Virus
product to be compatible with Vista. All that was completed and still no luck.
I need help ASAP. My pc may be at risk because of current conditions.

RE: Failed to migrate Virus Defs. error message.

Tom -

I use Avira Anti Vir - which is now being manually upgraded from the 6.0
version to the 7.0. I keep getting a wonderful pop up window telling me that
my antiviral is not compatible with Vista. I ran the program anyway - but
then it would not update because the security win firewall decided to block
the update.

I fixed this!!!! See if on your program you can get into your properties
list - right click on icon ect. and revert that software program to XP. If
that does not work - uninstall it - reinstall it to your doc folder and then
try reverting it after a fresh install then update your definitions. I hope
it works. I am still getting the windows "this program is doomed" window but
clicking the run anyway button is less annoying than running some software
program I do not trust.

I wish you luck....Take Care.

I recommend you look at some other AV solution than Norton AV. Avast
(free), AVG (free), NOD32, all work fine in Vista.

Posting this here because I ran into the same problem, and was able to
fix it easily and cleanly. (After being frustrated as were many
others.)

- I first made sure I had a copy of the install upgrade .exe (for
Vista)

- ran the Norton removal tool as instructed by the Symantec support
site (problem is the tool is incomplete)

- key part - in the folder c:\ProgramData, rename the folder
"Symantec" to "Symantec.OLD"

- then re-run the install

Mine seems to be problem-free after that.
