The unknown publisher dialog is just a warning. It should still give you an
option to allow them. Is yours not?

The only software Windows blocks because of unknown publishers are kernel
mode drivers on x64 builds. It doesn't sound like that fits what you are
doing. Can you tell us exactly what you are trying to install (where you got
it) and exactly how the dialog you are seeing looks?

Windows Defender may block some programs when you start a Windows
Vista-based computer

True, but that has an allow button, and it sounded like this one did not.
The only block I am aware of due to missing signature, without an override
option, is the kernel drivers one on x64.

Re: help

When i go to hoylegames.sierra.com and click on one of the games to play it
normally would have a room runner to launch the room to play oinline with my
friends, it comes up about active x control and asks me if i trust this and
want to allow it i say yes and then it is supposed to install but instead it
say windows block this software because it can not verify the publisher.

Re: help

it exactly says windows has blocked this software because it cannot verify
its publisher. name of wonweblauncherControl.cab. i went to windows defender
and it doesn't recognize the software in its history as a blocked program.

Aaah. OK, here is what you need to do:

1. Find the Contact Us... button on hoylegames.sierra.com
2. Use that button to submit a bug report to them. The certificate used to
sign their software expired on April 22, 2006. That is why IE refuses to
allow it.

Installing the control is a bit tricky since it is technically invalid:
1. Launch Internet Explorer as an administrator and navigate to
hoylegames.sierra.com
2. Right-click the clock in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and
select Adjust Date/Time.
3. Click the Change date and time... button and elevate. Set the date to
sometime prior to April 22, 2006.
3. Click one of the games
4. When the yellow bar comes up that says "To help protect your security,
Internet Explorer stopped this site..." click it and select "Install ActiveX
Control..."
5. You should now be able to install the control normally. When you are done
you can probably set the time and date back

You need to be an administrator to install the requisite goop to play these
games. The control is apparently just a launcher that installs a bunch of
other things on your computer. I did not go that far in my testing, so there
may be other problems as well. When you are done installing everything, exit
Internet Explorer and restart it without using the Run as administrator
option. Then you can continue playing your games.
