MS update setting

Ok, I'm getting pissed at this crazy operating system. ... Windows update is
erroring and unable to load a a update. I go to help for the error and it
runs me all around and still no real answer. -error 20x101x12029x . In one
of the non-helps it says to add 3 web sites to the firewall to allow access
for the updating process. So, I go to the firewall setting, over to the
exceptions tab and it has a list with checkboxes. Fine, but the things the
error non-help says to add are not listed. Click the Add Program button and
get a list of items on my system. .... so how the hell do I add the
suggested sites to allow their suggested access thru the firewall.......

That's not the actual error message. If you post the real message,
preferably in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate, it is likely one of them
can help you. Most likely you are just unable to reach Windows Update at the
moment but without having the exact error code nobody could tell for sure.

Re: MS update setting

That is the real error code - it comes after the update starts - and yes,
nobody can tell for sure what is happening!.

20x101x12029x is the real error code? Sorry, but I can't believe that. Error
codes are hexadecimal DWORDs, something like 0x0a230f89. If you have an error
code of 20x101x12029x the only explanation is that your system is fatally
horked. That could of course happen, but it is exceedingly unlikely that it
could be that messed up and still boot.

Re: MS update setting

yep, that is the code given. On the screen that comes up with the code,
there is a help entry that takes me to another screen that has other codes
on it - none of the help items really explain what should be done or what
the code is really saying. All I can do at that point is do the MicroSoft
circle dance thru the help screens. Thanks any way ... Will just admin the
whole computer setup and maybe something will work...

Any chance you can tell us what else is on that screen? I'm starting to
think you are seeing a spoof. EXACTLY what are you doing to make this happen?

Re: MS update setting

Hope to not be able to reproduce it, I went in and changed the settings on
all my directories under the C drive. The program then worked without any
problems. Kinda hate doing that, but it was the last ditch effort to get the
problem fixed. The program was a vista update for one of my currently
installed programs. I've had several update programs fail in the setup start
processes.

Re: MS update setting

I am getting the same error code 80072F78 on 2 updates. Malicious software
removal and a "Vista" update. I've tried to do 1 at a time with no luck.
I've re-booted to no evail. I'm wondering If it has anything to do with my
being connected to the intenet at work on a wifi?
Any chance your on wifi also?
