UAC / Protected Mode prevents any downloads in IE7?

With UAC on, I am unable to download anything from an internet site. I click
on the link/button or whatever, and nothing happens. The ony way I can get to
download anything is by adding the site to my trusted sites. I don't want to
do this for every site I want to download something from - help!

What makes you believe this is related to UAC? Can you give us more
information on what is happening?

1. Browser?
2. Site?
3. Which link?

Could this be a link that actually is not directly to a download but rather
a link to a page which spawns a script that performs the download? That type
of action should result in a canary warning bar in IE. Not sure how it would
impact other browsers.

Thanks for your reply. I have resolved the issue. I was using "GetRight", a
most excellent download/ftp manager, which was causing a problem with
Protected Mode on. Without protected mode, everything was fine. I have since
upgraded GetRight to the latest version which is Vista compatible, everything
works and I'm a happy bunny!

Figures it was something like this. You didn't have to turn off Protected
Mode to get this to work did you?

No, UAC is still on and download links work fine.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to train UAC to stop blocking certain
startup programs...

Is it UAC blocking them or is it Windows Defender? Not everything
security-related in Vista is UAC. :-)

No, definitely UAC this time. I've been using Defender for ages without UAC
on, no problem (but I did just check Defender to make sure ;-)). When I
activate UAC it blocks 2 progs at startup - I can manually allow them each
time, but it's a pain...

Apologies if this shows up twice (the web interface is not very good).

Are these programs in a logon script? That is the only instance where UAC
actually "blocks" something; or are you using the term "block" to mean
"prompt to allow" in this scenario?

I have an icon in the notification area entitled "Blocked startup programs".
Clicking on it gives me the options:
Show or remove blocked startup programs
Run blocked program >
View help

the help is informative:

"Run or remove blocked startup programs

User Account Control prevents programs that require permission or an
administrator password from running automatically when Windows starts. If a
program is blocked, you'll see a message in the notification area that says
some startup programs need permission to run. You can run a blocked program,
remove blocked programs from startup, or ignore the notification."

Then it offers this:

"To run a blocked program
Right-click the Blocked startup programs icon in the notification area.

Click Run blocked program, and then click the name of the program you want
to run. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation,
type the password or provide confirmation.

Note
You'll need to repeat these steps each time you want to run the program
after starting Windows."

It's that last bit I don't like!

Do the programs have the "Run as administrator" bit checked in the
properties?

Also, are they run from a logon script? If so, see this:
