PC Tools Firewall Plus now Vista compatible

Version 2.0.0.9 of PC Tools firewall Plus was released today and is Vista
compatible. I'm running it now on Vista Business. It installed without
incident and so far is playing well with AVG antivirus and
SpywareTerminator. Be aware that it doesn't turn off the Windows Firewall -
you have to do so manually. Also, by default it doesn't ask permission to
allow access for "known" applications. I turned this option off as I want
to see the firewall intercept everything for a while and confirm that sees
what's going on.

Re: PC Tools Firewall Plus now Vista compatible

Thank you. I think this is the first free fw released for Vista and a lot
of us have been waiting for one.

Re: PC Tools Firewall Plus now Vista compatible

It looks like this may not be ready for prime time. I installed it and
found several problems. It caused problems with a PPTP VPN and seemed to
not apply custom rules that I created. (The log showed it blocking Port 53
particularly even after explicitly allowing it for the VPN connection.) It
also crashed Vista (explorer had to restart) at one point after making
several rules changes.

Did you check Vista's f/w?

Your welcome. I've been running it for a couple of days and so far have not
noticed any memory leaking or slow downs. The only issue is sometimes when
I first boot up the internet connection is blocked. Rebooting solves the
problem, but I'm not sure why. I noticed that the firewall placed my NIC in
the internet zone so I've tried moving it to the trusted zone to see if that
solves the problem. This seems appropriate anyway since my computer is
behind a router. On a different note, I ran the free leak-test available at
the Comodo.com site and my system was "unreachable" (which is a good thing),
but I think this was really a test of my router and not the PC Tools
firewall. I will have to plug the NIC directly into the cable modem to
expose the firewall to the leak-test.

A problem has been identified with PC Tools Firewall Plus 2.0.0.9 that
causes it to block the internet connection. They say a fix will be
delivered ASAP. You can follow the conversation at www.pctools.com (go to
the firewall forum). I've disabled the PC Tools Firewall and enabled the
Windows Firewall until the fix is available.

Thanks for the info!
I've also reverted to the Windows Firewall for now. Will keep an eye out
for the fixed version too.
