Hi,

You don't need to install new Defender software. Windows Defender uses
definitions files which tell Defender which programs are spyware or malware
or which actions performed by these programs can be harmful to you computer.
As spyware is continuously 'improved' (meaning, spyware authors are
continuously finding new ways of installing their programs on your
computer), it's important for Windows Defender to regularly download new
definition files, in order to be able to detect the new generations of
spyware. (In fact, just like an antivirus program does)

When Windows Vista tells you that Windows Defender needs to update, this
only means that new definition files need to be downloaded, not that the
Defender software needs to be updated.

You may have noticed a Windows Defender icon with an exclamation mark (!) in
the icon tray of your taskbar. If you click on that icon, a window will
open with a button that you can click to retrieve the new definition files.
(Sorry, I've no clue what the windows and button text is in Dutch). This
can take some time. When the update has finished, the window will become
greenish, and will tell you all is well. The exclamation mark will then
disappear from the Defender icon in your icon tray.

Cheers,
Jan.
