New to Vista, worried about security

Hi Everyone!
I will soon be a new vista user, and I'm wondering if the new (2007)
Norton AntiVirus and Internet Security software programs will be an
adequate security arsenal. Also, would these render the "Defender"
thing obsolete, or should I continue to use the security options that
come originally with Vista along with my fancy and expensive Norton
stuff.

Thank you for your help!!

Re: New to Vista, worried about security

Oh, here is some background info if you need it.

I will be using an HP Notebook, 1.80 something-herz, 80GB. I don't
look at porn, I rarely download/steal music or movies - basically just
email, chatting, and general surfing stuff.

You should peruse this newsgroup and see what others are saying. If it has
needed saying, it's been said here.

I would personally never screw up my system with a Norton product.

If you are worried about security you should start learning about it.
Understand the risks and how to mitigate them. It does'nt have to be
too difficult. Then you will realise that computer security is'nt
about installing as many security products as possible.

You could start by stating what worries you and what you want to
protect yourself from. Then we can take it from there.

Hi
i have to agree with B.Nice norton products are really bloated for what
they do, best use nod32 from eset for anti-virus

RE: New to Vista, worried about security

I would consider using one of the free anti-virus programs available and drop
the Norton idea. My Vista computer came with a 90 day free trial of McAfee
Security suite and I noticed a remarkable increase in the speed of my PC once
it was removed. Use Windows Defender and maybe Ad-Aware for spyware
protection.

Hey Joe
I live across the river from you.
Forget Norton and go with AVG Free edition.
Works great on XP and Vista,I have used it for years now.

My view is that Norton products are the worst available. "Fancy and
expensive" or not, I recommend dumping them entirely and using some of the
better products out there, many of which are freeware.

Besides Windows Defender, I use

Avast! Antivirus
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
Spyware Blaster.

All of the above are feeware.

Re: New to Vista, worried about security

My Vista computer came with an unasked for Norton free trial, nortons a
problem prog which remains on your computer even after it's been uninstalled!
I'd like to know how to remove it completely and do I really need anything
except Ad-Aware and Spybot with windows defender??
