| Guest | Vista vs. OneCare Firewall I am an original subscriber to Windows OneCare, which I've always used with it's Firewall ON. Upon installation of an upgrade from XP to Vista, I cannot access the internet or Windows Messanger with the OneCare Firewall on - only when I shut it off. Is there a problem, do I have settings wrong somewhere, or what should I do??? -- Dale |

| Guest | Re: Vista vs. OneCare Firewall I had a problem similar but not exactly the same. I think uninstalling and reinstalling might help. Here is what I was told to do. Uninstall OneCare. Run Cleanup Tool. Reboot. Reinstall OneCare. • You can uninstall by clicking the Windows Pearl (replacement of start button on bottom left), navigating to control panel, clicking on "programs" and then selecting Windows Live OneCare and uninstalling it. • You can get the 1.5 cleanup tool from http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...areCleanUp.exe • You can re-install directly from http://onecare.live.com. As long as you remember the Windows Live ID & password that you originally used for installing OneCare, you should not have any trouble. I hope this helps you! | Guest | Re: Vista vs. OneCare Firewall HOw soon do you expect to have a fix for OneCare?? Until then, is it safe to simply use the Windows Firewall instead of going through the steps explained on the forum site you offered??? -- Dale "StephenB" wrote: > Dale <Dale@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >I am an original subscriber to Windows OneCare, which I've always used with > >it's Firewall ON. > > > >Upon installation of an upgrade from XP to Vista, I cannot access the > >internet or Windows Messanger with the OneCare Firewall on - only when I shut > >it off. > > > >Is there a problem, do I have settings wrong somewhere, or what should I do??? > > Read this forum post - > http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsO...83525&SiteID=2 > > The forums are your best location for support from fellow OneCare users. > -steve > -- > Stephen Boots > MVP Windows Live > Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator > sboots@mvps.org > |

You can use the information in the forum post to correct it or you can uninstall and reinstall OneCare to get things back to rights. If you choose to use the Windows Firewall instead of the OneCare firewall, you lose the benefit of the OneCare managed two way firewall and you will be in "red" status for now. Personally, I'd uninstall and reinstall OneCare. -steve -- Stephen Boots MVP Windows Live Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator sboots@mvps.org |

| Guest | Re: Vista vs. OneCare Firewall Hello Mr. Boots, I don't know about the onecare firewall being fixed. this is my experience, which I sent to ms on 4/22: I am a lone, home end-user - only one computer on this "network" I subscribed to the 90-day trial ms onecare package (73 days remaining). the onecare firewall seems to periodically, and without annunciation, shut itself off: "windows firewall service is not running." I forgot how I learned of the cessation. attempts to turn it on yield, "due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display windows firewall settings" it's set for "automatic upgrade," and automatic upgrade appears to be functioning normally. yet, in an attempt to get it running by "kicking" it, I pressed the *manual* upgrade button; this yielded, "Windows firewall was unable to make the requested updates." windows firewall has been problematical since the beginning (about 5 -6 weeks ago): I was on the phone with 2 ms techs for nearly 4 hours (countless reboots) to have vista's "windows security center" recognize windows firewall. I recently downloaded, from RealNetwork Website, and installed - but never actually used - Real Player. It was not until after I installed that I read RealPlayer's eula. it says that "I agree" to have RealNetwork reconfigure my firewall, open the udp port, install cookies from different companies (Rhapsody, Mozilla, to name two), and certain other liberties (details elude me at this moment). thinking that there may be a connection between this instant windows firewall incident and the RealPlayer bundled adware shenanigans, I uninstalled RealPlayer (one day after I installed it) - notwithstanding that windows firewall has, as I've said, ceased before. do you think that the onecare firewall stopped because RealPlayer reconfigured firewall (opening a udp port, allowing cookies of who knows what type)? anyway, what can I do about getting onecare firewall turned back on? and please offer me detailed, explanative instruction so I can learn from this. many thanks. -- --Fool On The Hill "StephenB" <sboots@mvps.org> wrote in message news:aui223tbihl47u3h5ous3crk43mac7jeud@4ax.com... > Dale <Dale@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > >>HOw soon do you expect to have a fix for OneCare?? >> >>Until then, is it safe to simply use the Windows Firewall instead of going >>through the steps explained on the forum site you offered??? >>-- >>Dale > It's been fixed, but since you performed the upgrade from XP to Vista with > OneCare in place, the defect hit you. All review of the firewall is done within the OneCare interface. -steve -- Stephen Boots MVP Windows Live Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator sboots@mvps.org |
