Vista - Vista does not recognize Anti-Virus software

Hi, (Note: I posted this on a general vista group before I discovered this
security forum. Sorry for the double post)...
I'm on Vista Home Premium and I've got Norton 2007.2 Anti-Virus software
installed (it's Vista compatible). I've even done a successful, full virus
scan. I installed the Norton 2007 just after the Vista upgrade.

For some reason, Vista does not recognize the Norton program and I have a
'danger'/security alert in my task bar saying my computer is maybe at risk.
If I click that icon, it takes me to the Security Center where it says that
Vista sees no Anti-Virus Software on my computer.

I do have a spy sweeper program as well but that is recognized ok by Vista.

What could be causing this?

Seeing as how other companies antivirus is properly recognized by Vista, I
would, as a second choice, take this up with Symantec support.

My first choice would be to remove anything and everything that has anything
to do with Symantec/Norton (and McAfee) from any computer I maintain.

I have to agree with Richard. Dump Norton it is next to useless. If you are
pushed for an anti virus application download the free version of AVG
(http://free.grisoft.com) or Avast (http://www.avast.com).

I use the free version of Avast!, which hasn't caused any problems on Vista.

I am running it in preference to AVG, which I did try but in various posts
on these forum, seems AVG *may* cause problems with it's interaction with
Windows Mail.

Don't install the mail scanner - it is very clearly an option during the
install. It does nothing useful and although I think you may have no
trouble with it I also think you won't gain from it.

Avast has a good reputation too so if you're happy with it stick with
it. You can always install two or more AV systems as long as you only
have one active at a time, but I concur with others about Norton and
MacAfee - snake oil and problematic.

I'm using AVG 7.5 Plus Firewall now and it seems to be going Ok, however,
I'm having a hard time getting the firewall going. That's an Avg
download/install issue I think.

Funny with all this, however - I swear on my very first Vista Upgrade
install I already had AVG 7.5 Pro installed and Vista declared it
incompatible during the install. So I Bought Norton 2007.

Grisoft now declares AVG compatible and now I see I wasted money on Norton
because it was listed as Vista Compatible.

I guess I could sell it for $10 on Ebay.

I had issues with NAV 2007 as well as NIS 2007 being recognized by Vista as
well as other problems. I got my $s back for both and I'm now running
Norton's 360 with no problems. Vista security seems to be happy and isn't
giving me warning about being unprotected. I tried both AVG and Avast free,
but then you get what you pay for. And I really got tired of which ever of
them kept telling me several times a day that my antivirus database had been
updated.

My experience with AVG free & their commercial anti malware product has
all been good in Vista.

Hard to understand why one would go from something that runs well in Vista,
is light on resources and is free ( or if you want a paid version go to
NOD32, it's highly regarded) to a paid version of Norton that is resource
heavy and considering the awful track record for Symantec's home offerings,
because there is an audible message which can actually be disabled in the
program settings. Plus there is no need for the Norton firewall. The Vista
firewall works well.

Hi, I seem to be having similar problems. I got my HP laptop about 2 months
ago and it has vista on it. i hadnt installed office 2007 permently untill
recently. About a week ago, Office all of the sudden locked up on me. I can
open the programs but I can not "use" them. I can recieve email, but can not
compose, send, or save anything. I called around and they told me the
problem was a security issue. When I got the computer I unistalled the
Norton that was already on the computer with the intent to use a different
program, CA Security. Apparently I can't do that? I was told that you need
to keep the same software that was already on it because you never "really"
delete it from the computer and part of it stays in the background and
attacks any new virus software you try and download. Does this sound right?
As of now, I guess I will go and buy Norton to see if this solves my problem,
but i dont understand why it would lock up Office. Any help?
