Same thing here. I just opened the box today, set it up and gave an administrator password (really easy) and now it tells me it is a wrong password.

I am not able to create a new one as I never was able to even set up a password recovery disk.

What can I do?

Since the true Administrator is disabled by default, if you only had one
"administrative" user account created and you've forgotten the password
to it, try starting the computer in Safe Mode. Supposedly this will
enable the built-in Administrator account for the one session. The
default password may be a blank. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. If this works for
you, create at least a few extra user accounts for emergencies. I
usually create at least three accounts on client machines: one standard
user for every day work, two administrative users for emergencies.

If that doesn't work for you, since you just opened the box today and
presumably have nothing on it, do a system recovery to factory condition
per whatever method your computer mftr. has provided.

Malke,

Thank your for responding. Going in via safe mode did not do the trick. I had to go to the bios, change the cd to the start drive and then do a recovery and reinstall of the 1st Windows section. It took time, but the computer is back.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. So now make those extra emergency
accounts!

Re: lost user password in vista

Hi

I tried all the suggestions but nothing worked. Then I performed a system
restore because I didn't know what elese to do. It worked. I restored to
before I entered a password and got back into my account. Might be worth a
try?

Re: lost user password in vista

Did he make a password reset disk?
Is there another administrator account?
Here's what Help & Support says............

What to do if you forget your Windows password

If you forget the administrator password and don't have a password reset
disk or another administrator account, you won't be able to reset the
password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won't be
able to log on to Windows and will need to re-install Windows.

If you've forgotten your Windows password, you can reset your password by
using a password reset disk or by using an administrator account.

To use your password reset disk to reset your password
You will not be able to follow these steps if you have locked your computer.

If you have typed the wrong password, you'll receive a message that says
your user name or password is incorrect. When this message appears, click
OK.

Click Reset password, and then follow the instructions.

To use an administrator account to reset your password
Warning
If you use an administrator account to reset the password, you will
permanently lose access to any e‑mail messages or encrypted files that are
on that account.

Note
These steps cannot be completed on Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home
Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium.

Log on to the administrator account that you will use to reset the forgotten
password.

Click to open Local Users and Groups.* If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.

Double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Users.

Right-click the account that you need to reset the password for, and then
click Set Password.

Type and confirm the new password.
