| Guest | Re: Vista has taken the FUN out of computing. when you separate the private purchases from the manufacturer licenses for included vista you will find that it is the FORCED purchase of vista by the likes of dell, gateway, hp, etc.... that increased the profits. NOT the private purchases by individuals. mikeyhsd@comcast.net "Rock" <Rock@nospam.net> wrote in message news:OSnlF%236jHHA.4624@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... Taken the fun out? Hmm, I have fun with it, I had fun with XP, I have fun with computers. I view UAC as giving me control over what is happening instead of any program that wants to run as admin being allowed to. I get many fewer UAC prompts now that the system is set up. I don't think it has gone far enough for security. MS made too many concessions to the software authors for compatibility with older software. I wonder what one would think if they stopped by an hospital emergency room. Would you think everyone in the world is having a health crises because you visit a place people go when they have a health problem? Have fun not computing, but let me give you a tip, they are not going away. By the way MS profits are up something like 64% this last quarter because of Vista and Office. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

I want my system to be secure from virus, malware and spyware. MS has taken a lot of heat in the past over security in their OS's and they have simply responded by trying to make Vista more secure. I have been running Vista for several months and you'll find that UAC prompts you quite a bit when you're setting a new machine up but over the longer term it is not much of a distraction. I think we also need to keep in mind that Vista is a new OS and will improve as service packs are released. While I believe MS made a few blunders (no http mail access in Windows Mail and Visual Studio 2003 incompatibility) in the move to Vista I'm hoping they will learn from their mistakes with improvements to Vista with each service pack. I don't think the perfect OS exists as there are pros and cons to each one but Vista is likely to dominate the desktop in a few years and it will get better and better as service packs are released. |

| Member Rep Power: 13 ![]() | I'm always up for a good tirade. ![]() Personally I like the security features, just wish they were a little less obtrusive. Like maybe a little balloon that pops up from a dancing paper clip asking me if I want to trust an app, or something like that. Greying out the whole !@#$ screen and beeping is just plain obnoxious. There could be something more important I need to do first, you know. Or maybe the OS should be allowed to reprioritize my entire schedule? And FWIW what I find most annoying about Vista is the same cr@p I hated in XP: restore points and search indexing. The OS actually performs pretty well once they're disabled. Though I must admit the default settings do make me fondly reminisce working with an Atari 800... all that sitting and waiting... ah, the good old days... ![]() </tirade> |
