whenever i try and update it says error code 0x80240029
whenever i try and update it says error code 0x80240029
Try this:
Open “Windows Update” from the control panel. Click “Change settings”,
on the left side of the window. Choose "Never check for updates". Go back
to the main “Windows Update” page, and, on the right side, click “Check for
updates” . If a Defender update is shown as an Install choice, install it,
as well as other non-optional updates that may not have been showing up.
Then change the “Change settings” choice back to where you want it.

In other words, "Check for updates" in Defender is giving you the error
code? Looking at "About Windows Defender", the current Engine Version
should be 1.1.2503.0, and the current Definition Version should be
1.18.2540.1. You can also look at Control Panel > Windows Update > "View
update History" to see when the last update for Defender was installed, and
whether it was successful or not.

Have you tried the slash and burn approach from Microsoft? Found here,
this will cause you to lose your Update History, if you care about such
things, but not your previously installed updates:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934562/en-us
Another alternative:

Go below to one of the posts dated 4-12-07. Look for TaurArian [MS-VP].
He/She shows you how to restart in safe mode and change the Software
Distribution Folder. Apparently some of us have corrupted Softwar
Distribution Folders and simply have to rename them. I DID THIS AND WAS ABLE
TO DOWNLOAD ALL UPDATED DEFINITIONS AND THE PROBLEM NO LONGER EXISTS. THIS IS
THE ONLY DIRECTIVE I SAW ON THIS BLOG FOR ERROR 0x80240029 THAT WORKED. USE
IT FOLKS. THEY WERE RIGHT ON TRACK AND I CANNOT THANK THEM ENOUGH. NO MORE
PROBLEMS FOR MY WINDOWS DEFENDER. RUNNING GREAT FOR THE FIRST TIME.

HELPFUL). WHEN YOU OPEN IT YOU WILL SEE TaurArian [MS-MVP] LISTED. GO TO THE
ONE ON THE BOTTOM DATED 4-14-07 AND PRINT HER DIRECTIONS OUT. FOLLOW THEM AND

Hi all,
I'm getting this error 0x80240029 frequently. I've followed the microsoft
suport page to rename the folder in safemode, at then it works, but several
days later the problems reoccurs. I'm looking for a fix to prevent this from
happening, anyone?

Harrumph! Nothing works! Is this a Wondows problem or a "ME" problem.
Driving me crazy!
