| | File sharing problems in Vista Home Premium I can't get folder sharing to work at all on my computer. I have tried everything I can find on the internet, but nobody seems to have the same problem as me. When I try to turn public folder sharing on, I get the message "The RPC server is unavailable." If I try to put the folder I want to share in my public folder, I get the message "You need permission to perform this action." I am the only user on this computer and I don't see anything wrong with the administration stuff. I've posted this once in here but never got a reply, probably because nobody else knew what to do either. I have to say, compared to XP, Vista is a unbelievable pain in the ass for almost everything. If Mac had a tablet, I would've gotten one. Any clue what I can do to fix this problem? |

Well is the RPC Remote Procedue Call server started? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224370 Resolution #1 Start the RPC server is the same command in Vista at the Command Prompt. I issued the command, it came back saying it's all ready started. You may need to right-click the short-cut for Command Prompt and go to Properties and do a Run as Administrator. The rest of the resolutions you can forget about, since it's for Domains. > If I try to put the folder I want to share in my public folder, I get the > message "You need permission to perform this action." Maybe the link can help you. http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...973031033.mspx > I am the only user on this computer and I don't see anything wrong with > the > administration stuff. What user permmions does your user account have on the folder is your account even there? I find the commands talked about in this link interesting. http://help.wugnet.com/vista/Unable-...pict50050.html You know, I went to Services off of Admin Tools, but I don't know what rights are needed to stop and start a service it's all disabled and I did a Run as Admin on the short-cut. |

I don't have a solution for you, sorry, but I have a similar problem: can't share/access Vista files/folders across my XP/Vista network except for Vista's Public Folder. That works fine, and whenever I need to access anything to or from Vista across the network, I copy it all to the Public Folder and go. A helluva workaround. And yes, I show my entire Vista C: drive as "shared" without permissions. Grrrrrrrr....... EW |

| | Re: File sharing problems in Vista Home Premium I have the same problem. I can transfer files between my XP and 98 machines. When I try to paste some files into a Vista directory, I get the permission statement. Vista does not allow some files to be transferred to Vista. Typically exe files. The local network is a Private Network in Vista. I have given everyone full NTFS file permissions. The problem is not the file. I can download the same file from the internet or transfer the file via a USB drive and sneakernet. Is this part of WIC (Windows Integrity Control) that M$ introduced in Vista? Is there some way to tell Vista to allow networking on my private network? Printer sharing is also a problem. Vista can't get the driver files via the network. |

However, about the printer sharing: perhaps I don't understand your network configuration, but don't you need the printer drivers installed on ALL computers that use/share a printer?? I have a small home network, works great for printer sharing, but both computers must have the driver for the shared printer installed. EW |

| | Re: File sharing problems in Vista Home Premium I had problems too.. mine now works with these exact settings: Network Discovery = ON File sharing = ON Public folder sharing = OFF Password protected sharing = OFF then just right click the folder you want to share and set the sharing permissions. (enable guest account if you dont want your users to be prompted for a password) -- Regards, Hamish Ahern. |
