Vista - disappearing downloads

hi
i have windows vista basic, it came with norton preinstalled 1 month trial i
removed and installed avast on line. All was ok but now i cant download
anything, i have tried to save to locations but nothing. i even removed avast
to see if that was the problem, which made no difference, and now i cant
reinstall it. is this a security problem? ie windows defender. any
suggestions gratefully received

This seems not to be a security-related. However, the
issue sounds interesting (maybe some driver-related problems?).
I suggest that you use SoftICE or WinDBG to isolate the problem.

Hello cherie24 , Try using system restore.

Choose the point just before the uninstall of Norton was done.

This should restore your PC back the way it was.

Then use the Norton Removal Tool.

Reboot

Now try the installation Avast!

tried to restore, even tried last manufacturers date no luck.some bright
spark said try firefox as a manager if only i could download it........thanks
for all your suggestions though, i keep trying.

Hey,
i got my new computer today with windows vista so its all going well i
brought norton 360 and installed it live updated it and updated the windows
defender and the windows firewall thing, so i go onto my internet and i want
to try to download say for example firefox yet when the download box comes up
and i click on save as it dissapears and thats it nothing else happens i
really am stuck please help me!

I have similar issues with downloads disappearing after i clicked run and
then nowhere to be found, even using the search box in the start menu can't
find these "downloads"
