Vista - Denied permission to access folders

I'm having similar issues similar to this. I created my own topic since
all scenarios that I've looked up are different and don't seem to work.
This one might work, but I think I'm doing something wrong. I'm using
Windows XP Pro SP2.

I formatted my C: and 3 of 7 folders on my F: are now giving me issues,
says Access is Denied. I used to fix it in the Security tab but there
isn't one showing. I'm the only user and I'm logged in as the admin.
The folder says that there's 0 files and 0 bytes, I only have 70gb free
on a 465gb HDD but the folders only add up to 174gb. So there's a
couple hundred gigs that are on the drive but are not counting.

I tried the solution given here by going to the cmd prompt, switching
to the F: (by typing F: and hitting enter. When I try the commands
listed it says that 'takeown' is not recognized as an internal or
external command, operable program, or batch file. The folder in
question is at this path: F:\desktop. I cannot access that folder
through the command prompt either. I can access other folders on the
drive, just not the 3 in question.

Use a Linux (or other) penetration disk.

yeah I dont know what that means. maybe like a super easy graphical
button I can push and check a little radio button or something would be
more up my alley.

I think that some data maybe damaged or the uninstall of the system causes
some problems of recognizing you right to read the files , though existing,
but not being available through the file management of the operating system.
It is certainly not available through command line.
If you want to have your data recovered, you may use some professional
software such as Handy Recovery, or asking professional data rescue team for
help.
And, I've no idea about the meaning of 'takeown'.

Opinion above is only for reference. Make your own decision.

FYI the OP has resolved this issue at another forum by disabling simple file
sharing, which turns on the security tab in XP.

I just tried Jimmy Brush's suggestion and it worked fine, except for the little error created by the insertion of the sad face in the command string.

I tried every combination of letters and characters I could think of until I googled the search string and saw that it should read:

Type: icacls . /grant USER:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q

So, since my user name was owner-pc, the correct string to type in the command line would be:

icacls . /grant owner-pc:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q

Once I typed in that string, it immediately granted me access to all the files in the folder.

Another trick is to find your real user name. I always assumed it was my screen name, but it wasn't. To find your user name in Vista, click on Start, Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety. Then click on User Accounts again.

You will see your screen name, user type and picture on the far right. On the far left, you'll see a list of options. Click on Configure Advanced User Profile Properties and a new window will open showing your "official" user name. In my case it was Owner-PC.

i have the same problem. occured while trying to set up a network. now i
cant access drive c i keep getting access is denied. but i cant run cmd
prompt as administrater as it wont let me. i get the message
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe the parameter is incorrect. i dont
think anybody knows how to cure this as ive been trying for days. i just
seem to get stupid questions like is your copy of vista legal.

 Change location to the folder you need access to (e.g. cd e:\folder).

Press the Enter key.

Should come in handy for future visitors.

Just wanted to say this worked perfectly for me. I had a bunch of old folders on an old hard drive that I needed to regain permissions to. I plugged it into my Windows 7 x64 machine, ran this command, and it worked!

Now the scary part is, if this can regain permissions to folders that users aren't supposed to have perms on, how can one truly prevent users from gaining access to a windows folder?

I'm having these same problems. It's actually my brother's laptop, he's running Vista 32bit. We were downloading a game in RAR format. I have XP on my comp and after the install it setup just fine and worked immediately after. He tried to extract it and all the files extracted except setup.exe. It gave him an error in WinRAR and aborted the process. I decided to send him the setup.exe alone in a RAR format. It wouldn't extract, same error. I uploaded the .exe file on Rapidshare, he downloaded it, but then got a "Permission Denied" prompt, as adminstrator he clicked continue. It gave him the access denied error with only retry and cancel as options, so it failed.

We tried the command prompts. The first one with the takeown would begin but eventually got an error something like windows couldn't open some file or another...sorry, forgot the message and now his computer is having even more trouble....so we ran the other prompt with icacls which worked, but didn't change anything for the download.

Most recently he recieves errors after opening pretty much anything. He can't even begin any downloads in Internet explorer. Now we tried a system restore, which hopefully will at least put us at square one before all the errors...

I have been trying to get this one file to load on his computer for about 4 days or so now and it's getting to be pretty annoying. Sometimes the WinRAR would extract everything 100% with no errors but when you go to the folder it extracted to Setup.exe would not be there. I'ts getting pretty frustrating. PLEASE help!

Ok, now we're having trouble with system restore...it says "windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

Also when he opens Internet Explorer it gives the same error as the system restore. Also when he tries to download something it gives the error "Internet Explorer cannot download ____ from ___. Internet explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." He got this trying to "save target as" on ANYTHING on ANY page.
