RE: windows updates

You need to give us a lot more information than that. What is the exact error
message? How exactly do you go about trying to download them? What is "bit
defender" and why do you believe it has anything to do with it?

RE: windows updates

The exact error messege is 80070020.....someone said if I had real time virus
scan it may be interfering, so I shut it off but that did not help. My virus
scanner is it defender. I am trying to download them from windows update like
I have for the last 7 years.

FYI, Defender is not an antivirus program. It works on non viral malware.
If you don't otherwise have an AV program you need to get one.

Avast (free) works well on Vista as does NOD32 and Kaspersky.

BitDefender is supposed to have had an update to resolve this issue.
Have you updated your copy recently?

Lots of people using BitDefender have had to disabled the 'Real Time
Scanning' or uninstall the application completely to get Windows Update
to work again but check the application is up-to-date:

Note: turning off BitDefender doesn't work, only turning off Realtime
Protection by removing the tick from the Realtime Protection checkbox
inside the BitDefender main window solves the problem!

Hi, Nerissa,

I'm not sure if you meant that BitDefender is your antivirus software, or if
you think that Windows Defender is doing it. Like Jasper said, Windows
Defender does not provide antivirus protection. You must use other software
for that.

If you are using BitDefender, find out if they have an update to fix the
problem. If they don't, then get other antivirus software. Personally, I
recommend ESET's NOD32. I gets high ratings from testers, puts a relatively
light load on the system, and I never have any problems with it (unlike with
bloated and resource-hogging McAfee and Norton software).

Right now, all that Microsoft has is a workaround:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825

It means disabling, albeit temporarily, your antivirus software.

WARNING: Make sure that when you do this to get updates that you DO NOT get
email or go anywhere else on the internet except to Windows Update. Then,
when the updates have finished installing, immediately re-enable the
antivirus software.
