What application?

What changes would be some redirects that are applied when not in
admin mode (pointing to valid material) vs. not applied in admin mode
(pointing to missing or invalid material that crashes the app).

Compare what is in matching subtrees within "Program Files" and (I
think) "Program Data", and look up info on folder virtualization.
