Vista - Win/Defender can't install Def updates

Well, I've had this problem before and some kind person out there guided me
in how to fix this problem. It's back. I can't get W/Defender to install def
updates. The Def. is on and does a daily quick scan and Real-time Protectn is
also on. Msg says my comp.is rung normally, but I can't get these Important
updates installed? Error codes are Ox80070643 and defs-1.20.2737.3. also get
80070713. I'm thinking each time I try to install these I'm getting a
different number here and there, however the Ox80070643 is a constant.

Try running Windows Update, and do a manual scan. Are the Defender
definition updates offered? Do they install?

If that doesn't work, try here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/

Under "Latest Definition Updates", choose your operating system type, 32-bit
or 64-bit, and try the manual download. Note here the instructions
pertinent to Vista:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx#top

Hello Dean...Thank you sooo much. That did the trick. Now I've got to get
the WinUpdate to install the Important Security Update for Excel 2003
(KB936507). As I don't really use Excel I'm not to concerned if I don't get
this update, unless it makes other programs at risk?

Back to your question Dean yes, I was running WinUpdate and tried the manual
scan, and yes that defender update was offered and wuld not install...couple
of days now. but your advice on going to the sec/portal and downloading did
the trick. I had even gone in to the Admin/Services/Office Source Engine and
made sure that it was set up as Automatic (Delayed Start) and also clicked on
'Start'. That never helped either, but your link w/download did the trick.

You may have already looked at this:

You could also try the standalone installer, however I can't find one that
says it's Vista supported:

Hi Suerr. Well I was finally able to get the update by going to the link
sent me by dean-dean. If you click backwards on the post here, you'll see
the link highlighted. Follow it and download the W.Defenders update there.
