Blocked start-up programs

Hello,
i have vista home basic.
Recently I've had to block a start-up program because for some reason
it was not letting me view web pages (I don't get it - I had to call
HP tech support and they walked me through it). So my internet
viewer is working just fine, no prob.
But now a window comes up constantly in the lower right-hand corner
saying "Windows has block start-up programs - click here to view
programs." How do I get this window from popping up all the time?
It's really annoying.
Thanks!

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

This Knowledge Base Article refers to WinXP, but the same principles
apply in Vista:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310560

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

For more specific help, you'll have to divulge the name of this mystery
program that's causing the problem.

You should find the program or short-cut and remove Run as Administrator off
of it.

You then go to Windows Defender, using All Users and Start-up from the drop
down list. You find the program or short-cut and add it to WD.

It may take a couple of logins before that blocked message goes away, but it
will.

Hello,

I created a tool that may help you:

http://www.jimmah.com/vista/Administ...n_program.aspx

It will let you "unblock" some programs.

Alternatively, you can manually unblock the program yourself by creating
a scheduled task that launches the program with "highest privilege", and
removing it from the other startup location.

Re: Blocked start-up programs

I have the same problem and I'm getting tired of seeing the message "Windows has block start-up programs - click here to view programs."

The program is Webshots and I have been using it for years because they have this great photo I love and use for my desktop. It's the only thing I use Webshots for... that one photo for my desktop and Webshots wont let me use it unless I use their software to display it.

In Webshots you can disable the tray icon which I have always done when using Windows xp because I don't want it to run and check the web for new daily photos. I have done this with Vista x64 also but it didn't work... the tray icon loaded anyways even if I had unticked ''Run at starup'' so I had to remove it from the startup list using Windows Defenders. It is no longer in WD and shows as disabled when using msconfig, and the program doesn't run at startup, but the message Windows has blocked... keeps on appearing.

I did what JB above said and created the task and now I get the message anyway and Webshots also launches at startup, which is not what I want.

What I would like to be able to do is keep Webshots without having it launch at startup and without having the message ''window has blocked a program'' appearing all the time.

Is that possible?

Re: Blocked start-up programs

I love Webshots and use it, but a Vista pre installation program told me it
was not compatible. Will love to use it.

You'll have to contact the maker of Webshots and ask them if they
intend to make it compatible with Vista. It's a Webshots problem, not a
Vista problem.
It's being blocked for a reason.

Re: Blocked start-up programs

Now that I know it's not a Vista thing I will ask Webshots or close my eyes when the message pops up!

Thanks for the replies.
