Can't access 2nd Harddrive files after switching back 2 XP after V

I had installed vista onto my 2 hard drive computer. And after installing
Vista, I had to change the permissions for most of my files on my 2nd hard
drive so I could actually access them with Vista.

After noticing how slow vista is, I switched back to XP. Now I cannot access
the files on my 2nd hard drive. Everytime I click one of the folders like
lets say D:\Documents and settings\User\Desktop it says "Not accessible,
Access Denied"

How do I switch the permissions back? Thank You

Hello Killr,

Glad you make the rollback soon! I had installed so much software on Vista I
would not be able to go back now.

Login as administrator or a user with admin privilegies.
Open your computer, right-click the drive, select properties, go to
security, advanced. At this point you may be asked to take ownership... If
so, do it.

Go to Owner tab, select yourself (or the admin). CHECK REPLACE OWNER ON
CHILD OBJECTS (my Windows is in spanish so the check may have a different
label).

Click ok.

go there again (richt click, properties, security) and add yourself to the
list... Check you have full control. Answer yes if asked to replace
permission on child objects.

If you are command-line used, try (as administrator):

cacls d:\ /c /g yourusername:f

Luck!

Re: Can't access 2nd Harddrive files after switching back 2 XP aft

Hey Jorge.

I am actually using Windows XP now. I had done that when I was using vista,
but now i can't access the hard drive because it has the vista permissions on
it.

How do I make it so I can access it on XP?

Thanks

Boot to SafeMode with your Admin password, or use "runas" to launch explorer
with your admin login, then set the permissions on the drive root and all
subfolders.

Re: Can't access 2nd Harddrive files after switching back 2 XP after V

Hi, degwar here, new member.
I came across this thread after ripping my hair out trying to gain access to my third hdd, a seagate 320Gb sata.
I could not get access at all.

I had loaded it under W2K, and forgot I write protected it.

No amount of share enabling could get access to it

After a long period of frustration I realized a simple fact.

My access rights were incorrect.

Here is how to fix it...

Open my computer.
Open any folder.

Click tools, folder options.

At the bottom is a check box called "enable simple file sharing"
.

UNCHECK THIS BOX!

Click apply to all folders, apply, ok.

Now right click the hdd, click properties, ownership.
Click add your username, apply to subfolders, apply, ok.

Windows should open a dialog box saying taking ownership of, and be busy for a while.

Note this is using XP x64, but I assume that Vista X64 is the same.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!
