webcam security

hi
i am new to internet usage.
can someone tell me how to use my webcam safely?
can my webcam possibly be used without my knowledge/ consent?
if yes, how can i safeguard myself?

Cover the lens when you are not actively using the webcam. Most good ones
come with a shade for this purpose.

Any time am thinking about webcams& security, I start thinking about
setting a couple of hidden security webcams in my kids' rooms. Yes,
it's not totally ethical. but this way I'll be sure they are under
control while using theirs own webcams. Security of a child is above
all other possible reasons
