Re: Vista 64 Preboot and Drive Encryption??

What exactly are you looking for? If it is full disk encryption, why not use
BitLocker?

Have got to agree here. I moved to Bitlocker after some research, even the might Schneier agreed it was good and he's normally still hurting about losing the AES bid to Rijndall.

I use Truecrypt for encrypting the other drives.

That's BitLocker. Comes with Vista Enterprise and Ultimate. Type "Bitlocker"
in the Search box on the Start menu.

This is Microsoft we are talking about surely with a threat of a court order or something along those lines they could decrypt your drive in theory? I know Drivecrypt is based in germany for their laws and they put no backdoor in and even they cant uncrypt your drive.

Re: Vista 64 Preboot and Drive Encryption??

Found this,

One security implication of a software encryption system like BitLocker is that the recovery key/password entry process could be spoofed by another bootmanager or OS install. Once the spoofed software captured the secret, it could be used to decrypt the VMK, which then allows access to decrypt or modify any information on the user's BitLocker encrypted hard disk. This risk can be reduced by configuring the computer's BIOS to only allow booting from the internal hard disk, and then protecting this setting with a strong password. This will not work if your adversary can reset the CMOS memory on your brand of computer to delete the password.

If you distrust Microsoft so much, why are you running their OS?

The answer is "No."

The answer is "No."
Thanks for the helpful post. I don't distrust Microsoft they provide a good product. I simply want a undecryptable drive and pre-boot auth for 64bit. No harm in talking about how secure systems are.

So my answer is,

"No." I dont distrust MS.
