antivirus software

I have McAfee and was told thru this community that it is not compatible with
Vista. A friend told me to get Avast, which is a free download. What is
your position on this Avast and is it compatible with Vista?

Re: antivirus software

I'm using Avast on Vista Ultimate and haven't had a problem with it.

McAfee was bundled with Vista Home Premium on my new Toshiba laptop I
purchased a few weeks ago.

I've since deleted it and moved on to better things. : )

Avast works just fine here. I'm happy with it. I would have McAfee or
Norton on any of my machines.

Sorry, important word missing. That should be "would *not* have ..."

Re: antivirus software

You should not have to active anti virus programs at the same time.
Uninstall McAfee and reboot before installing any other anti virus.

1. Removal tools for recent Mcafee products
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=71943

2. Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
(Choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.)

Disable the e-mail scanning function during installation as it provides no
additional protection. In fact, most of experts believe that scanning
incoming and outgoing mail causes e-mail file corruption.
